Remove News Notifications From Android Lock Screen

Understanding Android Lock Screen Notifications

Your Android lock screen is the first thing you see when you wake up your phone. Android lock screen notifications are messages that appear on this screen without requiring you to unlock your device. These notifications come from various apps installed on your phone and can display breaking news, weather updates, sports scores, social media alerts, and many other types of information.

According to research from Pew Research Center, Americans receive an average of 63.5 notifications per day on their mobile devices. News apps are among the most frequent notification senders, with major news outlets like CNN, BBC News, The New York Times, and Fox News pushing alerts multiple times throughout the day. Some users find these notifications helpful for staying informed, while others experience notification fatigue—a condition where the constant stream of alerts becomes overwhelming and distracting.

Android lock screen notifications serve a specific function in the operating system's notification management system. When an app sends a notification, Android's system determines how to display it based on the app's settings and your device's configuration. The lock screen is one display location where these notifications appear, along with the notification panel (accessed by swiping down from the top of your screen) and in-app notifications.

The notification system on Android devices runs in the background continuously. This means news apps can send notifications at any time, day or night, regardless of whether your phone is locked or unlocked. The notifications that appear on your lock screen are filtered through Android's notification channels—a feature introduced in Android 8.0 (Oreo) that allows users to control how they receive notifications from specific apps.

Understanding where these notifications originate helps you manage them more effectively. Each news app has its own notification settings that you can modify independently. Some apps allow you to control notification frequency, timing, and content type through their in-app settings, while others rely entirely on your Android system settings. Takeaway: Before removing notifications, identify which news apps are sending them by checking your lock screen and notification history for several days.

Accessing Notification Settings on Your Android Device

To manage notifications on your Android device, you need to access your phone's notification settings. The process varies slightly depending on your Android version and device manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, etc. each make minor modifications to Android's base system), but the general steps remain consistent across most devices.

Start by opening your phone's Settings app. On most Android devices, you'll find this in your app drawer or by swiping down twice from the top of your screen and tapping the settings icon (usually a gear symbol). Once in Settings, look for "Apps" or "Applications"—this is where you'll see all installed apps on your device. Some devices call this section "App Management" or "Installed Apps."

Once you're in the Apps section, you can view your list of installed applications. Look for the news app whose notifications you want to remove. Tap on the app name to open its detailed settings page. This page contains information about the app's storage usage, permissions, and crucially, notification options. This is the primary location where you'll control how that specific app sends notifications to your lock screen.

For devices running Android 8.0 and newer, you'll see a section labeled "Notifications" on the app's settings page. This is where Android's notification channel system becomes visible. You may see multiple notification types from a single app—for example, a news app might have separate channels for "Breaking News," "Sports Updates," "Local News," and "General Alerts." Each channel can be controlled independently, allowing you to keep some notification types while disabling others.

On older Android versions (Android 7.1 and earlier), the notification options were simpler—usually just a single toggle to turn notifications on or off for each app. If you have an older device, your options are more limited to an all-or-nothing approach for each app. Takeaway: Make note of your Android version (found under Settings > About Phone > Android Version) before beginning, as this determines which notification management features are available on your device.

Removing Individual News App Notifications

Once you've located a specific news app in your Settings, you can control its lock screen notifications through several methods. The most direct approach is to disable notifications entirely for that app, though Android also offers more nuanced control options.

For Android 8.0 and newer devices, open the Settings app, navigate to Apps, select your news app, and tap "Notifications." You'll see a toggle at the top that says something like "Show Notifications" or "Allow Notifications." Turning this toggle off will prevent that app from sending any notifications, including those on your lock screen. Some news apps have multiple notification channels listed below this main toggle. For example, The New York Times app might have channels for "Headlines," "Breaking News," and "Recommendations." You can turn off only specific channels while keeping others active—this way, you might disable breaking news notifications while keeping sports updates.

If you want notifications from the app but don't want them appearing on your lock screen specifically, look for an option labeled "Show on lock screen" within the notification settings. Not all apps include this specific toggle, but major news apps like CNN, BBC News, and NPR typically offer this option. When this setting is disabled, notifications from that app will still reach your notification panel (the dropdown from the top), but won't display when your phone is locked.

Another useful setting is notification priority or importance level. In Android 8.0+, each notification channel has an importance level: Critical, High, Medium, Low, or None. Setting a news app's notifications to "Low" means they'll still arrive in your notification panel but won't make sound or vibration alerts, and may not appear prominently on your lock screen. This option lets you stay informed without being interrupted constantly.

You can also control when notifications arrive by setting "quiet hours" or "do not disturb" schedules. In your Settings, look for "Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls" or simply "Do Not Disturb." Here, you can schedule times when notifications are silenced—for instance, from 10 PM to 8 AM. During these periods, notifications will still arrive but won't display on your lock screen or trigger alerts. This approach keeps you from being woken by overnight news alerts while allowing daytime notifications. Takeaway: Most news apps offer multiple notification control points; you don't have to choose between receiving no notifications or being constantly interrupted—explore the specific channels and importance levels available for each app.

Managing Notifications From Multiple News Apps

Many users have multiple news apps installed: perhaps the default app that came with their device, a major news outlet's dedicated app, and a news aggregator service like Google News, Apple News (if available), or Flipboard. Managing notifications across multiple apps requires a systematic approach to avoid notification overload.

Begin by inventorying which news apps are actually on your device. Go to Settings > Apps and scroll through your list, noting every app that sends news-related notifications. This includes obvious ones like CNN or BBC News, but also less obvious sources like Weather apps (which often include news), Sports apps, Financial apps like Yahoo Finance, and Social media apps that might push news links. Open each app and check its notification settings to understand what it's currently sending to your lock screen.

Create a priority system. Decide which news sources are most important to you. For example, you might keep notifications enabled for a single primary news app while disabling the others, or you might disable breaking news notifications from all sources except one you trust most. This prevents you from receiving duplicate alerts about the same story from multiple apps.

Consider using a news aggregator instead of multiple individual news apps. Google News (available on most Android devices) and Flipboard compile news from thousands of sources. By using one aggregator app with notifications enabled and disabling individual news app notifications, you reduce the number of push alerts while still staying informed. These services also typically show which stories are trending, helping you prioritize what you read.

For users who want to stay informed without lock screen notifications, another approach is to check news deliberately rather than passively receive it. This means opening your news app or aggregator on a schedule—perhaps during breakfast, lunch, and evening—rather than being interrupted by notifications throughout the day. To make this easier, you might disable notifications entirely from news apps while keeping them visible in your home screen widget or app folder for easy access.

Some devices include a "Notification Management" summary feature. In Android 12 and newer, you can access Settings > Notifications > Notification History, which shows all recent notifications from all apps. This helps you identify which apps are sending
