Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants function similarly to natural teeth because they integrate with your bone structure over time through a process called osseointegration. This means the implant becomes a permanent part of your jaw.

The implant itself consists of three main parts: the fixture (the screw that goes into the bone), the abutment (the connector piece), and the crown (the visible tooth-like part). When you bite down on an implant-supported tooth, the force transfers through the crown and abutment directly to the implant, which then distributes that pressure to your jawbone. This is different from how bridges work, since bridges rely on adjacent natural teeth for support.

Dental implants have been used in dentistry for over 40 years. Modern implant success rates range from 93% to 98%, making them one of the most reliable tooth replacement options available. The titanium material is biocompatible, meaning your body typically accepts it without triggering an immune response. This is why implants can last 20-30 years or longer with proper care, sometimes even a lifetime.

In Burney, dental practices offer implants to patients who have lost one or more teeth due to decay, injury, or other reasons. The procedure takes several months from start to finish because your bone needs time to heal and bond with the implant before the crown can be placed. Understanding this timeline helps you plan accordingly and set realistic expectations for your treatment.

Practical takeaway: Dental implants are a long-term solution that mimics natural tooth structure and function. Unlike removable options, they become part of your jaw and can last decades with maintenance. Learning about how implants work helps you compare them to other tooth replacement methods.

Types of Dental Implants Available in Burney

Several implant styles exist to address different tooth loss situations. Endosteal implants are the most common type and work best when you have adequate jawbone height and width. These implants look like small screws and are placed directly into the bone. Most implants used in Burney dental offices are endosteal implants because they offer excellent stability and longevity.

Subperiosteal implants are another option, though less frequently used today. These implants sit on top of the jawbone but beneath the gum tissue. Dentists may recommend subperiosteal implants if you don't have enough bone height for traditional implants and prefer to avoid bone grafting. However, technological advances have made endosteal implants with bone grafting more popular now.

All-on-4 implants represent a specialized approach where four implants support an entire upper or lower arch of teeth. This option works well for patients missing many or all teeth in one arch. Instead of placing one implant per tooth, the four strategically positioned implants hold a bridge or denture-like restoration. This method can reduce treatment time and costs compared to individual implants for each missing tooth.

Single tooth implants replace one missing tooth without affecting neighboring teeth. This differs from bridges, which require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth for support. Mini implants are smaller than standard implants and work for patients with limited bone width or depth. They're sometimes used for lower front teeth or temporary applications, though they typically don't last as long as standard implants.

Burney dental providers can discuss which implant type matches your bone structure, number of missing teeth, and goals. The bone density and volume around your missing teeth heavily influence which option works best for your situation.

Practical takeaway: Different implant types serve different needs. Whether you're replacing one tooth or multiple teeth, Burney dentists can explain which implant style fits your anatomy and goals. Knowing these options helps you have informed conversations with your dental provider.

The Dental Implant Process: Timeline and What to Expect

The dental implant journey typically unfolds over three to nine months, depending on whether bone grafting is necessary. The process begins with a consultation where your dentist examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and possibly orders a CT scan to assess bone volume and density. During this visit, your dentist discusses your medical history, current medications, and any previous surgeries. Certain conditions like uncontrolled diabetes or recent radiation therapy may require special consideration, though they don't automatically disqualify you from implants.

If adequate bone exists at the implant site, the surgical placement typically happens next. Your dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the area, then creates a small opening in the gum and carefully drills into the bone. The implant is then inserted and the gum is closed with stitches. This surgical appointment usually takes 30 minutes to two hours depending on complexity. Most patients report minimal discomfort during surgery because of the anesthesia, though some experience soreness and swelling for a few days afterward.

After surgery, your body begins the osseointegration process where bone grows around the implant. This healing phase typically lasts three to six months for the lower jaw and four to six months for the upper jaw. The upper jaw has less dense bone, so it requires more healing time. During this period, you must avoid putting pressure on the implant site and follow your dentist's instructions about diet, oral hygiene, and activity. Some patients receive a temporary tooth or denture during this time so they don't have a visible gap.

Once healing is complete, your dentist schedules an appointment to verify that osseointegration was successful. If the implant is stable, the abutment (connector piece) is placed. A few weeks later, your dentist takes impressions for the crown. The crown is custom-made to match your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. When ready, your dentist cements or screws the crown onto the abutment. This final step restores your ability to bite and chew normally.

Practical takeaway: Implant treatment requires patience because bone integration cannot be rushed. Understanding each phase helps you plan time off work for surgery and anticipate when you'll have full tooth function restored. Communication with your dentist about the timeline ensures you know what to expect at each stage.

Bone Grafting and Additional Procedures for Burney Patients

Bone grafting becomes necessary when insufficient bone exists to support an implant. Tooth loss causes bone to resorb or shrink over time—studies show you can lose 25% of bone width in the first year after tooth loss and continue losing bone at a rate of about 4% per year. When you've been missing teeth for years, bone volume may be too low for traditional implants. Burney dentists can perform bone grafting to rebuild the area.

Several bone grafting materials exist. Autograft uses your own bone, typically harvested from another area of your jaw or hip. This option has the highest success rate because it contains living bone cells, but it requires two surgical sites and longer healing time. Allograft uses donor bone from tissue banks that has been treated and sterilized. Xenograft comes from animal sources, often bovine bone. Allografts and xenografts eliminate the need for a second surgery site, making them more convenient, though they may integrate slightly more slowly than autograft.

Synthetic bone substitutes like hydroxyapatite or beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) provide another option. These materials are completely synthetic and gradually resorb as your body's own bone grows in their place. They eliminate donor site concerns and infection risk from biological materials. Your dentist discusses which material matches your situation based on the amount of bone needed and your preferences.

Sinus lift surgery is another common procedure. If you're missing upper back teeth, the sinus cavity may be too close to allow implant placement. During a sinus lift, your dentist gently lifts the sinus membrane and adds bone graft material underneath. This increases bone height in that area. Sinus lifts typically add two to three months to your overall treatment timeline but make implant placement possible in areas previously considered unsuitable.

Ridge augmentation addresses bone loss along the top of the ridge where teeth are missing. Your dentist adds bone graft material to widen or heighten the ridge, restoring its shape. This procedure may be necessary if you've worn dentures for many years or experienced significant bone loss.

Practical takeaway: Bone grafting procedures expand implant options for patients with bone loss. While these
