Understanding Oregon License Plate Types and When You Might Need Replacement
Oregon offers several different types of license plates, and understanding which one you have helps you know what steps to take if replacement becomes necessary. Standard Oregon plates feature the state's distinctive design with a white background, black lettering, and the state name across the top. These plates are issued to most passenger vehicles registered in the state.

Beyond standard plates, Oregon provides specialty plates that support specific causes or organizations. Personalized plates let you customize your plate with letters and numbers of your choice, within state guidelines. Veteran plates display military service recognition and feature a different design. Disabled person plates identify vehicles with disabled drivers or passengers and include a wheelchair symbol.
You might need plate replacement for several reasons. If your plate becomes damaged, faded, or difficult to read, replacement keeps your vehicle legally compliant. Plates can suffer wear from weather, UV exposure, and road conditions over Oregon's many seasons. Physical damage from accidents, impacts, or intentional damage requires new plates. If your plate was lost or stolen, you'll need to report it and obtain a replacement to avoid potential misuse.
Oregon also periodically updates its plate designs. When this happens, you may have the option to switch to the newer design, though your current plate remains valid. Some vehicle owners choose replacement simply to update their vehicle's appearance with a current design.
Practical takeaway: Before contacting Oregon DMV about replacement, identify which type of plate you currently have and why you need replacement. This information helps you understand what process applies to your situation.
How to Order or Replace Your Plates Through Oregon DMV
The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles handles all license plate orders and replacements. You can initiate this process through several methods depending on your situation and preferences. The easiest approach for many people is visiting the Oregon DMV website, which offers an online plate replacement option for standard plates. This service works if your plate needs replacement due to damage, fading, or wear.

To use online ordering, you'll need your vehicle registration information, including your registration number and vehicle identification number (VIN). You'll also provide payment information, as replacement plates carry a fee. Oregon charges a standard replacement plate fee, typically around $31 for a single standard plate. The exact amount may vary, so checking the current fee on the DMV website ensures you have accurate pricing.
If you prefer in-person service or have a more complex situation, you can visit a local DMV office. Oregon has DMV locations throughout the state in cities including Portland, Eugene, Salem, Bend, Medford, and many smaller communities. Staff members at these offices can handle all plate replacement requests and answer questions about your specific situation.
For specialty plates such as personalized or veteran plates, you'll typically need to use either the online system or visit in person, as these require additional verification or customization. Disabled person plates require specific documentation showing disability status.
Processing times vary. Online orders typically process within 1-2 weeks, with plates arriving by mail. In-person replacements at DMV offices may be issued on the spot for standard replacement plates, though this depends on office availability and inventory.
Practical takeaway: Start by visiting Oregon.gov/DMV to determine whether you can order online or need to visit an office location. Having your registration number and VIN ready speeds up the process significantly.
Information About Fees, Payment Methods, and Processing Costs
Understanding the costs involved in plate replacement helps you prepare appropriate payment. Oregon's replacement plate fee covers the physical plate production and administrative processing. As of current rates, standard plate replacement costs approximately $31. If you're ordering multiple plates, each plate carries the full fee.

Payment methods vary depending on how you order. Online ordering through the Oregon DMV website accepts credit cards and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. This provides a convenient way to complete payment immediately while ordering.
When visiting a DMV office in person, you can typically pay using cash, check, credit card, or debit card. Some offices may have preferences or limitations, so contacting your local office beforehand provides clarity on accepted methods. This is particularly useful if you plan to pay by check or cash.
Additional fees may apply in specific situations. If you're ordering personalized plates with custom lettering, Oregon charges a personalization fee in addition to the base plate fee. This typically ranges from $15 to $25 annually, depending on the complexity of your customization. Veteran plates and disabled person plates may have different fee structures, sometimes with reduced or waived fees for military service recognition.
Rush processing is not typically available for standard replacement plates, as Oregon's system processes orders sequentially. However, if you need plates urgently due to a lost or stolen plate situation, visiting a DMV office in person may provide faster service than online ordering.
Some vehicle owners wonder about refunds if they order plates but then change their mind. Oregon's refund policy generally allows refunds within a certain timeframe if plates haven't been produced. Checking the specific policy on the DMV website or contacting your local office provides details about your refund options.
Practical takeaway: Budget approximately $31 for a standard replacement plate, plus any specialty fees if applicable. Have your preferred payment method ready when ordering, whether online or in person.
Step-by-Step Process for Reporting Lost or Stolen Plates
If your license plates have been lost or stolen, taking prompt action protects your vehicle and prevents potential misuse of your plate information. The first step is reporting the loss or theft to your local law enforcement agency. This creates an official record and may help if the plates are later found. You'll need to provide your vehicle information and registration details to the police.

After reporting to police, contact the Oregon DMV to report your situation. You can do this online through the DMV website or by calling your local DMV office. When reporting, have your registration number and VIN available. Explain whether the plates were lost or stolen and provide any relevant details from your police report.
The DMV will flag your vehicle in the system to prevent misuse of your plates. This protects you from potential liability if someone uses your stolen plates in traffic violations or other incidents. Once flagged, if law enforcement encounters your plates on another vehicle, they can quickly determine they're stolen.
After reporting, you'll need to order replacement plates. For lost or stolen situations, you may need to handle this in person at a DMV office rather than online, as the circumstances require verification. Bring your registration documents and police report information if requested. The DMV staff will guide you through obtaining new plates.
If only one plate was lost or stolen, you can replace just that plate. Oregon allows you to order a single replacement plate without replacing both if only one is missing. This saves cost compared to replacing your entire set. However, if both plates are missing, you'll order both replacements simultaneously.
Some vehicle owners worry about the time needed for replacement plates to arrive by mail. If you need to drive your vehicle before new plates arrive, contact the DMV office about temporary registration or transit permit options. They can provide information about what documentation may be needed for legal operation during the transition period.
Practical takeaway: Report lost or stolen plates to both police and the Oregon DMV promptly. Keep your police report number and contact information for future reference, as you may need these details when ordering replacements.
Information About Personalized and Specialty Plate Options in Oregon
Oregon offers personalized plates that let you customize your plate with letters and numbers of your choice, within specific guidelines. Personalized plates work great for expressing interests, displaying family names, or creating meaningful combinations. Personalized plate guidelines restrict certain combinations. Plates cannot contain offensive language, hate symbols, or content that violates Oregon law. The system automatically rejects inappropriate combinations, preventing registration of plates that don't meet standards. Additionally, plates must remain readable and meet vehicle registration requirements. You'll typically have several options or can try multiple combinations until you find one that's available and acceptable.
Beyond personalized plates, Oregon offers plates supporting various causes and organizations. Conservation plates feature wildlife imagery and a portion of fees supports wildlife programs. Veteran plates recognize military service and display distinctive designs honoring service members. Breast cancer awareness plates support cancer research and prevention programs.
