What Dental Implants Are and How They Work
A dental implant is a replacement tooth system made up of three main parts. The first part is the implant itself, which is a small screw made of titanium that goes into your jawbone. This screw acts like an artificial tooth root. The second part is the abutment, which is a connector piece that sits on top of the implant. The third part is the crown, which is the visible tooth that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

When you lose a tooth, your jawbone begins to shrink over time because it no longer has a root to support. This bone loss can change the shape of your face and make you look older. Dental implants work differently than other tooth replacements because the titanium screw actually fuses with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This means the implant becomes a permanent part of your mouth, much like a natural tooth root would be.
The process of getting dental implants typically takes several months. First, your dentist will examine your mouth and take X-rays or 3D images to see how much bone you have in your jaw. During the first surgery, the implant screw is placed into the bone. Your mouth is then given time to heal, which usually takes three to six months. During this healing time, the bone grows around the implant screw and holds it in place. After healing, your dentist places the abutment on top of the implant, and then the crown is attached to the abutment.
Dental implants have become increasingly popular over the past 20 years. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, more than three million Americans currently have dental implants, and that number grows by about 500,000 each year. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all of your teeth.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding that dental implants involve surgery and a healing process helps you know what to expect. This is different from other tooth replacements like bridges or dentures, which can be placed much more quickly but don't preserve jawbone the same way.
Types of Dental Implants and Treatment Options in Cordell
There are several different types of dental implants and various ways they can be used depending on your specific situation. The most common type is the endosteal implant, which is placed directly into the jawbone. This is the type that works best for most people and has the highest success rate. These implants usually look like small screws and can support one tooth or multiple teeth.

Another type is the subperiosteal implant, which sits on top of the jawbone but under the gum tissue. This option may be considered for people who don't have enough bone height or depth for a traditional implant. Subperiosteal implants are less common today because endosteal implants tend to work better, but some dentists in Cordell may offer this option for specific cases.
When it comes to replacing multiple teeth, there are different approaches. You might get individual implants for each missing tooth, with each implant supporting its own crown. Alternatively, several implants can support a bridge, which is a set of connected teeth. For people missing all their teeth, implants can support a full denture or a fixed set of teeth that doesn't come out.
Cordell, Oklahoma residents have access to dental practices that offer implant consultations and treatment planning. During a consultation, a dentist will examine your mouth, review your medical history, and discuss which type of implant might work best for you. They will consider factors such as the amount of bone you have, your overall health, and your budget. Some dental offices in Cordell work with specialists called periodontists or oral surgeons who focus on implant procedures.
The cost of dental implants varies depending on which type you need and how many teeth you're replacing. A single tooth implant typically costs between $1,500 and $6,000, including the implant, abutment, and crown. Multiple implants or full-mouth implant treatment costs more but may be more cost-effective than replacing each tooth separately over time.
Practical Takeaway: Learning about the different types of implants helps you have a meaningful conversation with your dentist about what might work for your situation. Ask your Cordell dentist which type they recommend and why during your consultation.
The Dental Implant Procedure: What Happens Step by Step
The dental implant procedure involves several stages, and understanding each step can help reduce anxiety about the process. The first stage is the planning and preparation phase. Your dentist will take detailed X-rays or use 3D imaging called cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to see exactly where your bone is and how much you have. They may take impressions of your mouth and discuss the timeline with you. This is when you'll learn whether you need any preliminary procedures, such as bone grafting or sinus lifting, before the implant can be placed.

The second stage is the surgical placement of the implant. On the day of surgery, you'll receive local anesthesia to numb the area, and you may also receive sedation to help you relax. Your dentist or surgeon will make a small cut in your gum to expose the bone, then carefully drill a hole and place the titanium implant screw into the bone. The gum is then stitched closed over the implant. This surgery typically takes 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how many implants are being placed. Many people describe the experience as being less uncomfortable than having a tooth extracted.
After surgery, you'll have some bleeding and swelling for a few days. Your dentist will give you detailed instructions about how to care for your mouth during this time. You may be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication to manage any discomfort. Most people can return to light activities within a day or two, though you should avoid strenuous exercise and hard foods for several weeks.
The third stage is the healing and osseointegration phase. This is when your jawbone grows around the implant and holds it firmly in place. This process typically takes three to six months for the lower jaw and four to six months for the upper jaw. During this time, you won't have a temporary tooth, though some dentists can place a temporary crown or bridge to help you look and function better while you wait.
The fourth stage is the abutment placement and crown making. Once your implant has fully integrated with your bone, your dentist will remove the temporary covering on the implant and place an abutment. Then impressions are taken to create your crown. This crown is custom-made to match your surrounding teeth in color, size, and shape. When the crown is ready, it's attached to the abutment with special cement or a screw.
Practical Takeaway: Knowing that implant treatment takes several months helps you plan ahead. Ask your Cordell dentist for a timeline showing when each step will happen so you know what to expect and when you'll have your new tooth.
Caring for Your Dental Implants After Treatment
Caring for a dental implant is similar to caring for natural teeth, but there are some specific things you need to know. Your implant itself cannot get a cavity because it's made of titanium, but the crown that sits on top of it can develop problems if not cared for properly. More importantly, the bone and gum tissue around your implant need to stay healthy for the implant to last a long time.

You should brush your teeth and implants at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Be gentle around the implant area, especially during the first few weeks after surgery. Use regular toothpaste, but avoid toothpastes with gritty particles that might scratch the implant or crown. Flossing is extremely important for implants. You should floss around your implant every day, just as you would with natural teeth. Some people find that water flossers or special implant floss works better around implants than traditional string floss.
Regular dental checkups are crucial for implant success. You should see your dentist at least twice a year, though some dentists recommend more frequent visits for the first year after implant placement. During these visits, your dentist will check that your implant is secure, that the crown is not damaged, and that the bone and gums around the implant are healthy. X-rays may be taken to monitor the bone level over time.
