Understanding Scratch Disk Errors in Photoshop
A scratch disk is temporary storage space that Adobe Photoshop uses when your computer's RAM (random access memory) runs out of room. Think of it like an overflow parking lot—when the main lot is full, cars park in the overflow area. When Photoshop processes large images or runs complex operations, it needs extra memory beyond what your computer has installed. The scratch disk provides that extra space, typically on your hard drive or solid-state drive.

Scratch disk errors occur when Photoshop cannot write to or read from this temporary storage location. Common error messages include "Could not complete your request because the scratch disk is full," "Scratch disk is full," or "Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disk is unavailable." These errors stop you from working until the problem is resolved. Users report experiencing these issues when working with files larger than 1 GB, applying multiple filters simultaneously, or when their computer storage is already nearly full.
The issue becomes more common when several conditions exist together: limited hard drive space remaining (less than 10-20% free), multiple large Photoshop files open at once, or insufficient RAM for the tasks being performed. For example, a graphic designer working with a 500 MB image file on a computer with only 2 GB of RAM and 5% free hard drive space will likely encounter scratch disk problems. Understanding why these errors happen is the first step toward preventing them.
Practical Takeaway: Monitor your computer's free storage space and watch for error messages mentioning the scratch disk. If you frequently work with large image files, understanding your computer's memory limitations helps you prevent these interruptions before they happen.
Checking Your Current Scratch Disk Settings
Photoshop allows you to see which drives are designated as scratch disks and change these assignments. By default, Photoshop uses your primary hard drive or the drive where the operating system is installed. However, if this drive fills up quickly, Photoshop can write to secondary drives instead. Checking your current settings is straightforward and takes only a few minutes.

To view your scratch disk configuration in Photoshop on Windows, open the application and select Edit > Preferences > Performance (or on Mac, go to Photoshop > Settings > Preferences > Performance). You'll see a section labeled "Scratch Disk" showing which drives are assigned and in what order. The primary drive listed has priority—Photoshop attempts to use it first before moving to secondary drives. Many users never check these settings and don't realize Photoshop is trying to write to a full drive.
The Performance preferences window also shows your current memory allocation and cache settings. Photoshop displays how much RAM you have available and how much is allocated to the application itself. For most users, Photoshop should use 50-75% of your total RAM. If you have 16 GB of RAM, Photoshop might use 8-12 GB, leaving room for your operating system and other applications. If this percentage is too high, Photoshop creates more temporary files on the scratch disk, increasing the risk of errors.
You can designate multiple drives as scratch disks in order of preference. For instance, if you have both a fast SSD and a larger traditional hard drive, you might set the SSD as the primary scratch disk (for speed) and the traditional drive as a backup. This setup provides more storage capacity and improves performance compared to using a single drive.
Practical Takeaway: Open Photoshop's Performance preferences monthly to confirm your scratch disk settings match your current computer configuration. If you added new storage or drives, update these settings to take advantage of the additional space.
Clearing Scratch Disk Space Effectively
The most direct way to resolve scratch disk errors is to create more free space on your hard drive. Most computers should maintain at least 10-20% free space on their primary drive, though 25% or more is preferable for smooth operation. When you have less than 10% free space, your operating system and applications slow down significantly because they cannot write temporary files. If your primary drive shows only 5% free space, clearing files becomes urgent.

Start by identifying what is consuming your storage space. On Windows, right-click your C: drive (or whichever drive is your primary), select Properties, and view the pie chart showing used versus free space. Click the "Disk Cleanup" button to see categories of files you can remove: temporary files, recycle bin contents, old Windows updates, and cached browser files. Removing these typically frees 1-10 GB depending on how long since your last cleanup. On Mac, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage and click "Manage" to see what is using space.
Beyond automatic cleanup tools, consider moving large files you are not currently using to external drives or cloud storage. Video files, photo archives, and old project files consume gigabytes of space. A single 4K video file might be 5-10 GB. Moving ten such files to an external drive frees 50-100 GB. This approach is particularly valuable because you retain access to these files through external storage without permanently deleting anything.
Another option involves moving your Photoshop cache and temporary files to a different drive if your computer has one. Photoshop stores cached image data in its scratch disk location. If you reassign scratch disks to a drive with more available space, Photoshop places its temporary files there instead, potentially freeing up your primary drive's resources for your operating system.
Practical Takeaway: Before any major Photoshop project, check that your primary drive has at least 20% free space. Run Disk Cleanup or equivalent tool, and move archived files to external storage to create breathing room for temporary files.
Configuring Multiple Scratch Disks for Better Performance
If your computer has multiple internal drives, configuring them as scratch disks in the correct order improves both performance and stability. Photoshop processes data faster when it can write to multiple drives simultaneously rather than queuing all requests to a single location. This is particularly relevant for users with both an SSD (solid-state drive) and a traditional mechanical hard drive.

A recommended configuration places the faster SSD as the primary scratch disk and a mechanical drive as secondary. SSDs read and write data 5-10 times faster than traditional drives. By using the SSD first, Photoshop handles most scratch disk operations at high speed. When the SSD reaches capacity or during particularly memory-intensive operations, Photoshop automatically spills over to the secondary drive. This setup provides both speed and redundancy—if one drive fills up, work can continue on the other.
To implement this configuration, go to Preferences > Performance > Scratch Disk on Windows, or Photoshop > Settings > Preferences > Performance on Mac. Click on each drive and use the numbered order to set priorities. You can also completely disable scratch disks for specific drives by unchecking them, though this is not recommended unless you are certain you have sufficient RAM for all your work. Photoshop requires at least one scratch disk to function.
For users with only a single drive, the principle remains the same: ensure that drive has maximum available free space. Close unnecessary applications to free up RAM, reducing the demand on scratch disk space. If you regularly encounter scratch disk errors despite having 20% free space, your available RAM may be the limiting factor. Upgrading from 8 GB to 16 GB of RAM, if your computer supports it, can reduce scratch disk dependency significantly.
Practical Takeaway: If you have multiple drives, spend ten minutes configuring them correctly in Photoshop's preferences. This one-time setup can prevent months of frustrating errors and improve your work speed noticeably.
Purging Photoshop Cache and Temporary Files
Photoshop stores cached image data even after you close a file. This cached data helps Photoshop reopen files quickly, but it also consumes scratch disk space. Over time, cache files can accumulate gigabytes of data from projects you completed weeks or months ago. Manually purging this cache is a straightforward way to free substantial space without deleting any actual work files.
