Understanding 2 Berth Camper Van Basics
A 2 berth camper van is a motorhome designed to sleep two people comfortably. These vehicles come in different sizes and styles, ranging from compact vans based on standard commercial vehicles to larger, more luxurious models. The term "berth" refers to a sleeping space, so a 2 berth van has two separate beds or sleeping areas. Understanding what makes these vans different from other camping vehicles helps you decide if this option matches your needs.

The main advantage of 2 berth camper vans is their balance between comfort and practicality. They offer more space than a simple pop-up camper or tent, but they are easier to drive and park than larger motorhomes. Most 2 berth vans range from 16 to 21 feet in length, making them suitable for both highway travel and tighter camping spaces. According to the RV Industry Association, 2 berth vans represent about 18% of the motorhome market in North America, reflecting steady demand from couples and small families.
These vans typically include basic living facilities such as a small kitchen area, bathroom, and dining space in addition to the sleeping quarters. Some models feature a shower and toilet, while others rely on hookups at campgrounds. The layout varies widely depending on the manufacturer and model year. Some vans position the bed over the cab, others have a rear bed with a lounge area that converts to sleeping space, and some feature side-by-side sleeping arrangements.
When shopping for a 2 berth camper van, you will encounter different types. Class B vans are built on a van chassis like a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter. Class C vans are larger, built on a truck chassis with a cab-over sleeping area. Converted vans are older commercial vehicles that someone has customized for camping. Each type has different price points, fuel efficiency, and amenities.
Practical Takeaway: Before comparing specific models, think about your primary use. Will you camp mostly in established campgrounds with hookups, or do you plan to stay in remote locations? Do you need a bathroom inside the van, or are campground facilities acceptable? These questions will help narrow your options significantly.
New Versus Used 2 Berth Camper Van Options
The decision between buying a new or used 2 berth camper van involves weighing cost, warranty coverage, condition, and personal preferences. New camper vans typically cost between $35,000 and $80,000 depending on the model and features. Used vans can range from $8,000 for older models to $50,000 for nearly-new vehicles with low mileage. Your budget will likely influence this choice significantly.

New 2 berth camper vans come with manufacturer warranties, usually covering the vehicle structure and systems for one to three years. Factory-installed appliances and plumbing systems are warranted by their manufacturers. The vehicle itself includes all the safety features and technology of current models, such as backup cameras, lane departure warnings, and modern engine management systems. New vans have never been used for camping, so you know the condition of every component. You can also customize features and colors to your preferences before purchase.
Used 2 berth camper vans offer lower purchase prices and a faster acquisition timeline. You can find quality used models from reputable dealers or private sellers. However, warranties may be limited or nonexistent, and you inherit any wear or damage from previous owners. Buying used requires careful inspection of the engine, transmission, plumbing, electrical systems, and appliances. You should have a pre-purchase inspection performed by an RV-certified mechanic, which typically costs $300 to $600 but may prevent expensive surprises later.
Several factors affect the value and condition of used camper vans. The number of hours the engine has run (engine hours, not mileage, matter more for RVs), freshwater and waste tank condition, age and functionality of appliances, roof and seal condition, and interior wear patterns all influence actual value. A 10-year-old van with 8,000 engine hours and excellent maintenance records may be in better condition than a 7-year-old van with 12,000 hours and spotty service history. Checking service records, asking specific questions about repairs, and inspecting the caulking around windows and roof seams are important steps.
Practical Takeaway: If you buy used, hire a professional RV inspector before finalizing the purchase. Look for service records that show regular maintenance of the engine, generator, water systems, and appliances. Confirm that all systems have been tested recently and ask the seller specifically about any water damage history.
Popular 2 Berth Camper Van Models and Manufacturers
Several established manufacturers produce quality 2 berth camper vans. Understanding the different brands and their typical features helps you compare options within your budget. Winnebago, Forest River, and Jayco are among the largest RV manufacturers in North America, collectively producing thousands of camper vans annually. Smaller, specialized builders focus on specific markets such as off-road capability or luxury features.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis forms the foundation for many premium 2 berth vans. It offers excellent reliability, fuel efficiency, and ground clearance. Vans built on this platform typically cost $55,000 to $80,000 new but hold resale value well. Examples include the Roadtrek RS Adventurous, which combines a living space with an off-road-capable suspension, and the Winnebago Revel, designed for outdoor enthusiasts with all-terrain capability and modern interior design.
Ford Transit and Chevrolet-based vans represent the middle price range, typically costing $35,000 to $60,000 new. These chassis are known for parts availability and mechanic familiarity across the country. The Dodge Promaster is another popular commercial vehicle platform used by several manufacturers. Models built on these platforms often prioritize value and practical features over luxury amenities.
For budget-conscious buyers, used Class B vans built on older commercial chassis (pre-2015) can be found in the $8,000 to $20,000 range. These vehicles require more frequent maintenance and may lack modern convenience features, but they provide functional camping spaces. Brands like Roadtrek, Pleasureway, and Chinook have strong second-hand markets because their earlier models proved durable.
European manufacturers such as Hymer and Dethleffs produce 2 berth vans that may be imported or available through select U.S. dealers. These typically emphasize compact efficiency and are popular in markets with narrower roads and smaller parking spaces. International options expand your choices but may affect warranty service availability and parts sourcing in your region.
Practical Takeaway: Visit RV dealers and attend RV shows in your area to see multiple models side-by-side. Test the bed comfort, practice using the kitchen facilities, and check that bathroom dimensions work for your needs. Many dealers allow rental of demo units for weekend trips, which provides valuable real-world experience before purchasing.
Key Features and Specifications to Consider
When evaluating different 2 berth camper vans, several technical specifications directly affect your camping experience. Understanding these features helps you match a van to your intended use and personal comfort requirements. The specifications fall into several categories: sleeping arrangements, kitchen and dining, bathroom, climate control, water and waste systems, and power generation.

Sleeping arrangements vary considerably. Some vans feature a fixed bed in the rear or over the cab, while others have convertible seating that transforms into sleeping space. Bed sizes range from twin (38" x 75") to full (54" x 75") to queen (60" x 80"), though queen beds are rare in 2 berth vans due to space constraints. Mattress quality affects sleep comfort significantly—some camper van mattresses are basic, while others use memory foam or marine-grade materials. Storage underneath beds or in adjacent lockers becomes important when living in limited space.
Kitchen configurations range from a simple portable stove to full galley kitchens with a three-burner cooktop, oven, and refrigerator. Most 2 berth vans have a compact kitchen with a single or double sink, a small refrigerator (typically 2.7 to 4 cubic feet), and 1-2 burners. The amount
