The Polestar 2 is the brand's sedan offering, starting at approximately $59,900 for the base Standard Range model. This entry-level version includes a single motor, rear-wheel drive, and a 111 kWh usable battery capacity. Moving up to the Long Range model increases the price to around $66,900 and adds a second motor for dual-motor all-wheel drive, along with extended driving range. The Performance variant reaches approximately $74,900 and includes enhanced suspension tuning, larger brakes, and additional performance features.
The Polestar 3, a mid-size performance SUV, starts at approximately $73,400 for the Standard Range version. This model provides a larger interior space and higher seating position compared to the Polestar 2. The Long Range variant begins around $79,400, offering increased battery capacity and dual-motor all-wheel drive capability. The Performance model reaches approximately $85,400 with upgraded drivetrain components.
The newer Polestar 4, a coupe-style SUV, begins pricing around $54,900 for the Standard Range rear-wheel-drive model. The Long Range all-wheel-drive version starts near $61,900. These prices represent Polestar's suggested retail value before any dealer adjustments, incentives, or regional pricing variations.
Practical Takeaway: Compare the base price of each Polestar model to understand where they sit in the market. The Polestar 4 offers the lowest entry point, while the Polestar 3 provides the largest vehicle in their lineup. Pricing differences between trim levels typically reflect battery capacity, drivetrain configuration, and performance enhancements.
How Battery Configuration Affects Vehicle Cost
Battery capacity is one of the primary drivers of price differences in electric vehicles. Polestar models offer different battery sizes that directly impact both the purchase price and real-world driving range. A larger battery means higher cost but greater distance between charging sessions.

The Polestar 2 Standard Range includes a 111 kWh usable battery capacity, providing approximately 260 miles of EPA-estimated range. The Long Range model features a larger battery pack with approximately 120 kWh usable capacity, delivering around 330 miles of range. This 70-mile range increase costs roughly $7,000 more upfront. For drivers who regularly take longer trips, this battery upgrade may reduce charging stops and provide greater convenience.
Similarly, Polestar 3 models demonstrate range improvements correlating with price increases. The Standard Range version offers approximately 270 miles of range, while the Long Range extends this to roughly 330 miles. The performance difference between standard and long-range batteries represents a practical consideration: drivers in regions with fewer charging stations may find the larger battery worth the additional investment.
Battery pricing reflects current technology costs and manufacturing expenses. As of recent production years, adding approximately 10 kWh of usable capacity typically adds $500 to $750 to the vehicle price. This pricing metric helps you evaluate whether the range increase justifies the extra cost based on your driving patterns.
Temperature and driving conditions affect real-world battery performance. Cold weather can reduce range by 20-40%, while highway driving typically uses more energy than city driving. Understanding these variables helps you assess whether you need the larger battery option or whether the standard range meets your actual needs.
Practical Takeaway: Calculate your typical monthly driving distance and compare it against the EPA-estimated range for each battery option. If your average monthly miles exceed the standard battery range, the long-range option may provide peace of mind. If most of your driving occurs within 200 miles of your home with regular charging access, the standard battery may prove sufficient.
Motor and Drivetrain Options and Their Price Impact
Polestar models offer different motor configurations that affect performance, capability, and overall cost. These options range from single-motor rear-wheel drive to dual-motor all-wheel drive systems, each adding distinct value propositions.

Single-motor rear-wheel drive configurations appear in the Polestar 2 Standard Range and Polestar 4 Standard Range models. These versions feature one electric motor positioned at the rear axle, delivering power exclusively to the rear wheels. This setup provides the lowest cost option, typically pricing $5,000 to $7,000 less than equivalent dual-motor versions. Rear-wheel drive dynamics offer responsive steering and a sportier driving character, characteristics that appeal to drivers prioritizing handling over all-weather traction.
Dual-motor all-wheel drive systems appear in Long Range and Performance variants across Polestar's lineup. These configurations place motors at both the front and rear axles, distributing power across all four wheels. The dual-motor setup improves traction in snow and rain, reduces acceleration-induced wheel spin, and enables torque vectoring capabilities that enhance cornering performance. All-wheel drive typically adds between $6,000 and $8,000 to the vehicle price.
Performance-specific motor tuning appears in the Performance trim level across all Polestar models. While these versions use dual motors like the Long Range models, they incorporate modified motor controllers and software calibration to increase maximum power output. The Polestar 2 Performance, for example, produces approximately 476 horsepower compared to 408 horsepower in the Long Range version. This additional 68 horsepower comes from optimized electrical management rather than hardware changes, yet it commands a price premium of approximately $8,000.
Acceleration improvements scale with motor configuration. The Polestar 2 Standard Range achieves 0-60 mph in approximately 6.2 seconds, while the Long Range completes the same sprint in roughly 4.3 seconds, and the Performance reaches approximately 3.9 seconds. For daily driving, these differences matter less than for enthusiast drivers, but they indicate the engineering variations reflected in pricing.
Practical Takeaway: Assess your local climate and driving conditions when choosing between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. If you experience frequent snow or rain, all-wheel drive provides tangible safety and control benefits. If you drive primarily in dry conditions, rear-wheel drive offers cost savings without sacrificing daily usability. Performance enhancements appeal primarily to drivers who value acceleration and track-day capability.
Understanding Available Incentives and Rebates
Federal and state incentives significantly impact the effective cost of purchasing a Polestar electric vehicle. The federal government offers an electric vehicle tax credit, while various states provide additional rebates or grants. Understanding these programs requires research into current regulations, as incentive structures change periodically.

The federal tax credit for electric vehicles provides up to $7,500 for qualifying new vehicle purchases. However, this credit operates under specific rules regarding vehicle assembly location, battery mineral sourcing, and purchaser income limits. As of 2024, Polestar models manufactured at the Volvo manufacturing facility in South Carolina may qualify for the full credit or a reduced amount depending on battery and mineral content requirements. The credit structure has evolved, with point-based calculations determining whether specific vehicles meet eligibility thresholds.
The federal credit can be applied in two ways: as a point-of-sale rebate at the dealership (reducing the purchase price directly) or as a tax credit claimed when filing federal income taxes (potentially refundable depending on your tax situation). Point-of-sale application requires your tax filing status and income to fall within specified ranges, with income limits higher for joint filers than single filers. You should review current IRS guidance or consult a tax professional to understand your specific situation.
State-level incentives vary considerably by location. California, for example, offers rebates up to $5,000 through its Clean Vehicle Rebate Project for low-to-moderate-income buyers. Other states provide tax credits, registration discounts, or charging infrastructure grants. Some states have phased out incentive programs or modified their structures based on appropriations, so current availability requires verification with your state's energy or environmental agency.
