Understanding Maryland's Toll Road System
Maryland operates one of the busiest toll road networks on the East Coast. The state's toll facilities include the Governor Harry Nice Bridge, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Fort McHenry Tunnel, and various highway segments managed by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). These roads collect tolls from millions of drivers each year—in fiscal year 2023, Maryland collected over $400 million in toll revenue. Understanding how this system works is the first step toward managing your toll bills effectively.

The tolls fund road maintenance, repairs, and expansions across Maryland's transportation network. Different toll facilities charge different rates based on factors like vehicle type (passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles) and time of day. For example, peak-hour tolls on some facilities may be higher than off-peak rates. Electronic toll collection technology allows drivers to pay without stopping at toll booths, making travel faster and reducing traffic congestion at collection points.
Many drivers use the Maryland E-ZPass system, which is an electronic toll collection method that automatically deducts tolls from a prepaid account as you pass through toll facilities. This system covers not only Maryland toll roads but also connects with toll systems in other states including Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Other payment methods include paying by mail after receiving an invoice or paying at specific locations.
Understanding your toll payment options matters because the method you choose affects how and when you'll receive bills. Some methods provide convenience and discounts, while others require you to take action after traveling the toll road. Knowing the differences helps you manage your account and avoid late fees or penalties.
Takeaway: Maryland's toll system is extensive and interconnected with other state systems. Learning which roads charge tolls and which payment methods exist will help you prepare for managing your toll bills.
Setting Up Your Online Account with Maryland E-ZPass
To pay Maryland toll bills online, the most direct method is creating an account through the Maryland E-ZPass website. The process begins by visiting the official Maryland Transportation Authority website at mdta.maryland.gov. From there, you can navigate to the E-ZPass section and look for account registration options. The registration process requires personal information including your name, address, phone number, and email address.

During account setup, you'll need to provide payment information such as a credit card or bank account details. Maryland E-ZPass accepts major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover) and direct bank transfers. Having this information ready before you start the registration process will speed things along. The account creation itself typically takes only a few minutes once you have all necessary details available.
After creating your account, you'll receive a confirmation email with your account number and login credentials. Save this information in a secure location. Your account number is essential for managing your account, adding funds, and tracking your toll transactions. Some people store this information in a password manager or a secure note-taking application for easy reference.
Once your online account is active, you can log in at any time to view your account balance, recent transactions, and payment history. The online portal shows when tolls were charged, which facility you used, and how much money remains in your account. This transparency helps you track your spending and plan for when you'll need to add more funds.
Takeaway: Creating an online E-ZPass account involves basic registration with personal and payment details. Once set up, you can manage your account 24/7 from any device with internet access.
Adding Funds and Managing Your E-ZPass Balance
Maintaining an adequate balance in your E-ZPass account prevents service interruptions and potential violations. When you add funds to your account, you're essentially creating a prepaid balance that tolls are drawn from each time you use a toll facility. Maryland allows you to set up both one-time payments and automatic replenishment options.

For one-time payments, log into your online account and look for the "Add Funds" or "Make a Payment" option. You can typically add any amount you choose, with minimum and maximum limits set by the system. Minimum deposits are usually around $10 to $20, while maximums may reach $200 or more per transaction. If you travel toll roads frequently—for example, if you commute daily on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge—adding larger amounts less frequently may be more convenient than making small deposits repeatedly.
Automatic replenishment is a feature that many account holders find convenient. This option allows you to set a threshold balance (such as $25) and specify a replenishment amount (such as $75). Whenever your balance drops below the threshold, the system automatically charges your payment method and adds the replenishment amount to your account. This means you won't have to worry about your account running empty during your commute.
The time it takes for funds to appear in your account varies depending on your payment method. Credit card payments usually process within 24 hours, while bank account transfers may take one to three business days. Understanding these timelines helps you plan ahead, especially if you're about to take a toll trip. Keep your payment method information current by updating it in your account settings if you change credit cards or bank accounts.
Takeaway: Set up automatic replenishment to maintain your balance consistently, or add funds manually when needed. Monitor your balance regularly to avoid overdraft situations on toll roads.
Paying Bills for Toll Violations and Unpaid Tolls
If you travel through a toll facility without proper payment or without an active E-ZPass account, you'll receive an invoice by mail. This happens when a camera captures your license plate but no toll payment is associated with your vehicle. The Maryland Transportation Authority uses automatic license plate recognition technology to identify vehicles that haven't paid tolls. In 2022, Maryland processed hundreds of thousands of toll transactions daily across its facilities.

Unpaid toll invoices typically arrive within two to four weeks after you use the toll facility. The invoice includes the original toll amount plus administrative fees, which can add $50 or more to the total bill. If you receive an invoice, you can pay it online through the MDTA website without needing an E-ZPass account. Look for a "Pay a Toll Bill" or "Pay by Plate" option on the website.
When paying an unpaid toll bill online, you'll typically need to provide your invoice number (which appears on the bill you receive), your license plate number, and your payment information. The online system will show you the exact amount due and allow you to pay with a credit card or bank account. Payment usually processes within one business day. Keep a record of your confirmation number for your records.
If you believe a toll bill is incorrect—perhaps because you had an active E-ZPass account that should have covered the charge—you can dispute the bill through the same online portal or by contacting the MDTA customer service office. Disputes must typically be filed within a certain timeframe, often 30 to 60 days from the invoice date. Gather documentation including your E-ZPass account statements that show your balance was sufficient at the time of travel.
Takeaway: Unpaid toll invoices arrive by mail and can be paid online quickly. Dispute incorrect charges promptly by providing evidence of proper payment or account status.
Using Alternative Payment Methods and Payment Locations
While online payment is convenient, Maryland offers several alternative methods to pay toll bills for those who prefer other options. Some drivers pay by phone by calling the MDTA customer service number, which appears on toll bills and is listed on the agency website. When paying by phone, have your invoice number, license plate number, and payment method information ready.

Payment by mail is another option, though it takes longer than online payment. The toll invoice includes a return envelope and instructions for mailing a check or money order. Payment by mail typically takes 7 to 10 business days to process, so account holders who are concerned about late fees should avoid using this method unless they mail their payment well before the due date. Write your invoice number on your check to ensure proper crediting to your account.
Some payment locations accept tolls in person. However, the number of physical toll collection booths has decreased significantly as Maryland has shifted toward electronic collection. Checking the MDTA website for current payment center locations near you is important if you prefer in-person payment. Be aware that location hours are limited, and you may need to wait in line during busy times.
