Understanding Your Best Buy Credit Card and When to Close It
The Best Buy credit card is a store-branded card issued through Comenity Bank that offers rewards specifically for purchases at Best Buy and Best Buy's website. Before closing any credit account, it's important to understand what you're closing and why you might want to do so. Some cardholders choose to close their accounts after paying off balances, while others close cards they no longer use regularly. Understanding the reasons behind closing a credit card can help you make an informed decision about whether this step makes sense for your financial situation.

The Best Buy card comes in two versions: a rewards card that offers points on purchases and a store card with promotional financing options. The rewards card typically earns points on Best Buy purchases that can be redeemed for discounts or rewards. The store card version focuses on promotional financing periods, often offering zero percent interest for specific timeframes on qualifying purchases. Both versions work similarly to other retail credit cards, but closing one requires following specific steps through Best Buy or Comenity Bank.
Common reasons people close store credit cards include: they no longer shop at the retailer frequently, they want to reduce the number of accounts they manage, they're concerned about overspending at that particular store, or they simply prefer to use other payment methods. It's worth noting that closing a credit card can have small impacts on your credit profile, as it may affect your credit utilization ratio and the average age of your accounts. Before closing, consider whether you have an active balance on the card, as you'll need to pay this off first.
Practical Takeaway: Make a list of your reasons for closing the account and verify you have no outstanding balance before proceeding with closure steps.
Preparing Your Account for Closure
Before you contact Best Buy or Comenity Bank to close your credit card account, you'll want to take several preparation steps. First, review your account to see if you carry any balance. If you do, paying this off should be your first priority. You can pay your balance by logging into your account online, setting up an automatic payment, calling the customer service number on your card, or mailing a check to the address listed in your account statements. Paying off your balance before closing prevents you from incurring interest charges and simplifies the closure process.

Next, review your recent transactions and statements to ensure there are no pending charges or disputes you need to address. Look back at least three to six months of statements if possible. If you spot any unauthorized transactions or charges you don't recognize, contact Comenity Bank before closing the account so these can be investigated. It's much easier to handle disputes on an open account than a closed one.
You should also check whether you have any active recurring charges or subscriptions tied to this card. Some people forget they've set up automatic payments for services using this particular card number. Review subscriptions, memberships, or regular purchases that might be charging to this account. You'll need to either cancel these services or update them to use a different payment method before closing the card to avoid payment failures or overdraft issues.
Consider whether you have any pending rewards or points on the card. If you've earned rewards points with the Best Buy card, you may want to redeem these before closing your account. Review how many points you have and what redemption options are available. Some card issuers allow you to use rewards even after closing the account, but it's safer to redeem them beforehand. Check your account or contact customer service to learn about your specific rewards balance and options.
Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist that includes: current balance amount, any pending charges, active recurring payments, and available rewards points before you begin the closure process.
Methods to Close Your Best Buy Credit Card Account
There are several ways to close your Best Buy credit card, and you can choose the method that works best for your situation. Each method has advantages and disadvantages in terms of documentation and confirmation. The most common methods include calling customer service, managing your account online, sending a written request by mail, or visiting a Best Buy store in person.

The phone method involves calling the customer service number on the back of your card or through Best Buy's website. When you call, you'll speak with a representative from Comenity Bank who can process your closure request immediately. This method provides real-time confirmation and allows you to ask questions or address concerns during the call. The representative should provide you with a confirmation number for your records. Keep this number in case you need to reference the closure later. Phone lines are typically open during standard business hours, which may vary by time zone.
Closing your account online through Comenity Bank's website is another option. Log into your account using your username and password, then look for account settings or preferences. Many card issuers provide an option to request closure through your online dashboard. This method creates a digital record of your request and you may receive confirmation via email. However, not all card issuers offer full closure through their online platforms, so you may still need to call if this option isn't available.
You can also request closure by mail by sending a written letter to the address on your account statement or on the back of your card. Write a clear, simple letter stating that you want to close your account and include your account number. Send it via certified mail if you want proof of delivery. Keep a copy of the letter for your records. This method is slower than calling or using the online option, typically taking several weeks for processing, but it provides written documentation of your request.
Visiting a Best Buy store location is another option. Store employees can provide information about the closure process and may be able to help you contact Comenity Bank, though they cannot directly process the closure since the card is issued by a separate bank. The store can provide the correct contact information and answer basic questions about the process.
Practical Takeaway: Choose the phone method if you want immediate confirmation, or use certified mail if you prefer written documentation. Document whichever method you choose by saving confirmation numbers, email receipts, or copies of correspondence.
What Happens When Your Account Closes
Understanding what occurs when your Best Buy credit card account is closed can help you prepare for changes to your credit profile and account access. Once your closure is processed, typically within one to two weeks, you'll lose the ability to make new purchases using that card number. The physical card will no longer be valid for in-store or online transactions at Best Buy or anywhere else that accepts credit cards. You won't be able to use the card even if you have available credit remaining in your account.

Your credit report will reflect that this account is closed. Specifically, it will show as "closed by consumer" or "account closed" depending on who initiated the closure. This notation stays on your credit report and is visible to creditors and lenders. While a closed account itself doesn't harm your credit score, it does affect how credit scoring models calculate your credit utilization ratio. Your utilization ratio is the percentage of available credit you're using across all your open accounts. When you close an account, your available credit decreases, which could slightly increase your utilization ratio if you carry balances on other cards. For most people with good financial habits, this impact is minimal.
The closed account will remain visible on your credit report for approximately seven to ten years, even after closure. This is normal and doesn't indicate a problem. Having a record of accounts you've responsibly managed and paid off can actually be beneficial to your credit history. The account demonstrates a track record of responsible credit use over time.
If you still owe a balance when your account closes, the account status will show differently on your credit report. You'll be required to continue making payments until the balance is paid in full. The closed account will show as "closed but not paid in full" until the balance reaches zero. It's important to keep making regular payments to avoid late fees and damage to your credit score.
Any rewards points or promotional benefits associated with the card will typically end once the account closes. If you had any unspent rewards points, they may be forfeited depending on the card's terms. This is another reason to redeem any available rewards before initiating closure.
Practical Takeaway: After closure, monitor your credit report to confirm the account status is accurately reflected, and keep making any required payments if you had an outstanding balance at the time of closure.
