Overview of New Hampshire's Vehicle Inspection System
New Hampshire requires vehicle owners to have their cars inspected regularly to ensure they meet safety and emissions standards. The state's inspection program, managed through authorized inspection stations, checks whether vehicles operate safely and comply with environmental regulations. Understanding how this system works helps vehicle owners know what to expect when taking their car in for inspection.

The inspection process in New Hampshire involves certified mechanics examining specific components of your vehicle. These inspections are not optional—they are required by state law. The state maintains a network of inspection stations throughout New Hampshire where trained technicians perform these checks. Each station is authorized by the state to conduct inspections and issue inspection stickers that vehicle owners must display on their windshields.
New Hampshire's inspection requirements have been updated in recent years to reflect changes in vehicle technology and environmental standards. The state periodically reviews its inspection procedures to ensure they remain relevant and effective. Vehicle owners should be aware of current requirements because these standards may differ from what applied to their vehicles in previous years.
The inspection sticker serves as proof that your vehicle has met state requirements. Without a valid inspection sticker, you cannot legally operate your vehicle on New Hampshire roads. Law enforcement officers can stop vehicles without current inspection stickers and issue citations. The inspection sticker is typically placed on the driver's side of the windshield where it is visible from outside the vehicle.
Practical Takeaway: Before scheduling an inspection, confirm that your vehicle's inspection sticker has expired or is about to expire. Check your windshield to see the expiration date on your current sticker. If your sticker shows a date that has passed, your vehicle is no longer in compliance with state requirements and should not be driven until a new inspection is completed.
Current Inspection Requirements and What Gets Checked
New Hampshire's inspection process examines multiple aspects of your vehicle to verify it meets safety and emissions standards. The inspection covers items that directly affect whether a vehicle can operate safely on public roads and whether it produces emissions within acceptable limits. Knowing what inspectors examine helps you prepare your vehicle and understand what might cause an inspection to fail.

Safety components make up a significant portion of the inspection. Inspectors check your vehicle's brakes, including brake pads, brake fluid condition, and brake system function. The inspection includes testing your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals to ensure they are working properly and are the correct brightness. Windshield wipers, washers, and the condition of your windshield glass are examined. The inspection also covers the horn, mirrors, and seatbelts to confirm they are present and functional.
Emissions testing is another critical component of New Hampshire's inspection. Depending on your vehicle's age and type, you may need an emissions test that measures the pollutants your vehicle produces. Newer vehicles typically undergo On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) testing, which reads data from your vehicle's computer system. Older vehicles may require a tailpipe emissions test. Vehicles that fail emissions tests will receive a failed inspection sticker and cannot be registered until the emissions problem is corrected.
The inspection also examines structural and mechanical components. Inspectors look for excessive rust or damage that affects the vehicle's structural integrity. They check your tires for adequate tread depth and proper condition—tires must have at least 2/32 of an inch of tread to pass inspection. The suspension system is examined, including springs and shock absorbers. Your vehicle's steering components and wheel alignment may be evaluated to ensure safe handling. The muffler and exhaust system are inspected to verify they are securely attached and not excessively loud.
Certain items that were previously inspected have been removed from New Hampshire's current inspection requirements. Understanding what is no longer required can prevent confusion during your inspection. The state has streamlined its inspection process by focusing on components that have the most direct impact on safety and emissions.
Practical Takeaway: Before scheduling your inspection, perform a visual check of your vehicle's lights, wipers, tires, and mirrors. Test your brakes and horn. If you notice any obvious problems—such as burned-out lights, damaged tires, or soft brake response—address these issues before your inspection appointment. This can help prevent failing the inspection and having to return for a re-inspection after repairs are made.
Inspection Frequency and Validity Periods
New Hampshire requires vehicle owners to have their vehicles inspected annually. An inspection sticker is valid for one year from the date it is issued. The expiration date is printed clearly on the sticker, typically showing the month and year when the inspection expires. Vehicle owners must have a new inspection performed before the current sticker expires to remain in compliance with state law.

The validity period begins on the date the inspection is performed, not on a calendar date. This means if you have your vehicle inspected in March, your sticker will expire in March of the following year. Some vehicle owners schedule their inspections around the same time each year for convenience, such as during their birthday month or when their vehicle registration renews. However, New Hampshire does not tie inspection expiration dates to registration renewal dates, so owners must track both dates separately.
New vehicles purchased new or transferred into New Hampshire from another state may have different initial inspection requirements. A vehicle newly registered in New Hampshire must pass inspection before the owner can legally operate it on state roads. If you purchase a vehicle that already has an inspection sticker from another state, that sticker is not valid in New Hampshire, and you must obtain a New Hampshire inspection before driving the vehicle.
Some vehicle owners wonder whether they can have their vehicle inspected before their current sticker expires to get a head start. In New Hampshire, inspections can typically be performed within a reasonable timeframe before expiration—generally within 30 days prior to the current sticker's expiration date. This allows owners to renew their inspection before their sticker expires without creating a gap in compliance. Check with your inspection station about their specific policy regarding early inspections.
If your inspection sticker expires while your vehicle is parked and not in use, your vehicle cannot be legally driven until a new inspection is completed. This applies even if the vehicle has not been operated since the sticker expired. The expiration of the sticker makes the vehicle non-compliant, regardless of the vehicle's actual condition or how recently it was last inspected.
Practical Takeaway: Mark your inspection expiration date on your calendar, phone, or vehicle registration documents. Consider scheduling your next inspection appointment about two weeks before your current sticker expires. This provides time to address any repair needs that might be identified during the inspection before your vehicle becomes non-compliant. If you cannot schedule an appointment immediately before expiration, plan ahead to schedule early within the allowed timeframe.
Finding Authorized Inspection Stations
New Hampshire has a network of authorized inspection stations throughout the state where vehicle owners can have their inspections performed. These stations are licensed and trained to conduct inspections according to state standards. Finding a convenient inspection station is straightforward, as many automotive repair shops, service stations, and dealerships are authorized to perform inspections.

The New Hampshire Department of Safety maintains a list of authorized inspection stations that is available to the public. This list can be accessed through the department's website or by contacting the department directly. The list includes the station name, location, phone number, and hours of operation for each authorized station. Using the official list ensures you are going to a station that is properly authorized to conduct state inspections.
Many vehicle owners choose to have their inspections performed at the same location where they conduct regular maintenance and repairs. If you already use a particular repair shop or service station, you can ask whether they are authorized to perform New Hampshire inspections. Chain service stations, independent repair shops, and new and used car dealerships frequently offer inspection services. Some stations are equipped to handle both diesel and gasoline vehicles, while others may specialize in one type.
When contacting an inspection station, you can ask about their hours, whether appointments are required, and typical wait times. Some stations accept walk-ins, while others prefer appointments. Prices for inspections vary between stations—while the state does not set a fixed price, typical inspection costs range from $25 to $50 depending on the station and whether your vehicle requires an emissions test. A few questions when calling can help you find a convenient station that meets your needs.
Rural areas of New Hampshire may have fewer inspection stations nearby. Vehicle owners in remote locations may need to travel further to reach an authorized station. Planning ahead and scheduling an appointment during times when you are already traveling to a larger town can make the inspection process more convenient. Some repair shops in rural areas have been
