Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from titanium that a dentist or oral surgeon places into your jawbone. This implant acts as a foundation for replacement teeth that look and function like your natural teeth. Unlike dentures that sit on top of your gums, implants are anchored directly into the bone, making them feel more stable and permanent.

The implant itself is a small screw-like post, typically about the size of a natural tooth root. Once placed, your jawbone grows around the implant through a process called osseointegration. This usually takes several months. After the bone has grown around the implant, a dentist attaches an abutment, which is a connector piece. Finally, a crown—the visible part that looks like a tooth—is attached to the abutment.
There are different types of implants available. Endosteal implants are the most common type and are placed directly into the jawbone. Subperiosteal implants sit under the gum but above the jawbone and are used when a patient doesn't have enough jawbone height. Mini implants are smaller and may be used in certain situations where space is limited.
The success rate for dental implants is quite high. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, implants have a success rate of about 95 percent when placed by trained professionals. The lifespan of an implant can be many decades or even a lifetime with proper maintenance.

The Dental Implant Procedure: What to Expect Step by Step
The dental implant process typically happens in phases over several months. The first step involves an initial consultation where your dentist examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and discusses your goals. During this visit, your dentist will check the health of your teeth and gums and measure your jawbone to determine if you have enough bone to support an implant.

If bone grafting is needed, this may happen before implant placement. Bone grafting involves adding bone material to areas where the jawbone is too thin or soft. This material can come from your own bone, donor bone, or synthetic bone. After bone grafting, you'll need to wait several months for the new bone to integrate before moving forward with the implant.
The implant surgery itself is typically done under local anesthesia, though some patients receive sedation. The dentist or oral surgeon makes an incision in the gum to expose the jawbone. Using special instruments, they create a hole in the bone and carefully insert the titanium implant. The gum is then stitched closed, and the bone begins to grow around the implant. This healing phase, called osseointegration, usually takes three to six months for the upper jaw and two to three months for the lower jaw.
Once osseointegration is complete, a second minor procedure may be needed to place the abutment. Some modern implants use abutments that are placed at the time of implant insertion, reducing the number of procedures needed. After the abutment is in place, your dentist takes impressions of your mouth to create the crown. The crown is custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth.
Practical takeaway: The implant timeline is longer than other tooth replacement options, often taking six to nine months total. Plan ahead and discuss the timeline with your Lockport dentist during your initial consultation.
Dental Implant Costs and What Affects the Price
The cost of a dental implant in Lockport varies depending on several factors. On average, a single tooth implant can range from $3,000 to $6,000 or more. This price typically includes the implant itself, the abutment, and the crown. However, costs can differ based on the complexity of your case and the specific materials used.

One significant cost factor is whether bone grafting is needed. If your jawbone isn't thick or tall enough, bone grafting may be required, which adds $1,000 to $3,000 to the total cost. The location of the missing tooth also matters—front teeth may cost more because they require more precise work to match your natural appearance.
The type of crown you choose affects the price as well. Porcelain crowns tend to be more expensive than other options but look very natural. All-ceramic crowns are another choice. The material and quality of the implant brand also influences cost. Some implant systems are more expensive but have been used successfully for many years.
Additional procedures can add to the cost. For example, if a tooth needs to be extracted before implant placement, that's an extra procedure. Some patients need sinus lifts, which is a procedure that makes more room for the implant in the upper jaw. Others may need gum grafting if gum tissue is missing or receded.
Insurance coverage for implants varies widely. Many dental insurance plans don't cover implants at all, while others cover part of the cost. Medicare typically doesn't cover dental implants. Some dental plans categorize implants as missing tooth replacement and may cover a portion. It's important to contact your insurance company to understand what coverage, if any, may be available for you. Dental offices in Lockport often offer payment plans that allow you to spread the cost over time.
Practical takeaway: Request a detailed cost estimate from your dentist that breaks down each component of the implant treatment. Ask about payment options and financing that might be available to make treatment more manageable.
Who Can Have Dental Implants: General Health and Mouth Considerations
Most people can have dental implants, but certain medical and dental conditions need to be discussed with your dentist. Generally, you need to be in reasonably good health and have a healthy mouth free of active gum disease. Your dentist will look for signs of tooth decay and gum problems and may recommend treating these before implant placement.

Adequate jawbone is necessary for implants to succeed. Your dentist uses X-rays to measure your bone height and thickness. If you've been missing teeth for a long time, bone loss may have occurred, which is why bone grafting is sometimes needed. Some people have naturally thinner bones, which your dentist can evaluate.
Certain medical conditions require discussion with your dentist and doctor. People with uncontrolled diabetes may have slower healing, which affects implant success. Those taking medications that affect bone health or those with certain autoimmune conditions should inform their dentist. Past radiation therapy in the head or neck area may impact implant placement decisions. However, having any of these conditions doesn't automatically mean you can't have implants—it just means your case needs careful evaluation.
Smoking and implants require special attention. Research shows that smokers have lower implant success rates compared to non-smokers. Many dentists recommend quitting or significantly reducing smoking before and after implant surgery. Heavy alcohol use can also affect healing and implant integration. Good oral hygiene habits are essential because implants require the same care as natural teeth—regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings.
Age is not a barrier to implants. Younger patients need to have finished growing, which typically means age 18 or older. Older adults can have successful implants as long as they're in good health. Some older patients worry that implants are too complex, but many people in their 70s, 80s, and beyond have successful implants and report feeling more confident with them.
Practical takeaway: Schedule a consultation with a Lockport dentist who can review your complete health history and assess whether implants are a suitable option for your specific situation.
Caring for Dental Implants: Maintenance and Long-Term Success
Caring for dental implants is similar to caring for natural teeth, though there are some specific points to understand. Daily brushing and flossing are essential. You should brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and use floss or a water flosser daily. Special floss designed for implants is available and helps clean around the implant crown and under the gum line where bacteria can hide.
