Overview of Current Apple Watch Models
Apple currently offers several watch models at different price points, each designed for various needs and budgets. As of 2024, the main options include the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Each model runs watchOS, Apple's operating system for wearables, and connects to iPhones to provide notifications, health tracking, and app functionality.

The Series 9 represents Apple's standard flagship offering, featuring the latest processing technology and display innovations. The SE model provides a more affordable entry point while maintaining core fitness and health features. The Ultra 2 targets serious athletes and outdoor enthusiasts with enhanced durability and specialized features. Understanding the differences between these models helps you determine which might match your lifestyle and needs.
All current Apple Watch models include health monitoring capabilities such as heart rate tracking, blood oxygen measurement, and sleep tracking. They all support fitness tracking for various workout types, including walking, running, cycling, swimming, and yoga. The watches can store and play music, receive calls and messages, and connect to thousands of third-party applications through the App Store.
Price points vary significantly. The SE typically starts around $249, the Series 9 around $399, and the Ultra 2 around $799. These prices may vary by retailer, storage capacity, and band choices. Refurbished or previous-generation models often cost less through authorized retailers.
Practical Takeaway: Research which model fits your budget and primary use case—whether that's general fitness tracking, casual daily wear, or serious athletic performance—before exploring specific features.
Display Technology and Design Features
Apple Watch displays have evolved significantly over the years. The Series 9 introduced the Retina display with enhanced brightness, reaching up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness in full sun. This brightness level makes the screen visible even in bright outdoor conditions, which previous generations struggled with. The display uses LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) OLED technology, which allows the screen to adjust its refresh rate from 1Hz to 60Hz based on what's showing on screen.

The Series 9 comes in two case sizes: 41mm and 45mm. The larger size appeals to people with bigger wrists or those who prefer a more prominent display. The SE also offers two sizes—40mm and 44mm—but uses a slightly less bright display technology. The Ultra 2 features a larger 49mm case designed for visibility during intense activities and rugged environments. All models are available in aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium, with different colors and finishes to match various styles.
The Always-On Retina display feature lets you see time and key information without raising your wrist or tapping the screen. This functions because the display dims automatically when your wrist is down and brightens when you raise your wrist or look at it. Previous generation watches had this feature, but the Series 9's enhanced brightness makes it more useful in various lighting conditions.
Crown and button design differs between models. The Digital Crown is a rotating dial on the side that lets you scroll through information and navigate menus. The side button below it controls app switching and payment functions. The Ultra 2 includes an additional Action button that you can customize to launch specific apps or functions, which regular Series 9 and SE models lack.
Practical Takeaway: If you spend time outdoors or in bright environments, the Series 9's enhanced brightness provides real advantages. If you prefer a smaller or larger watch face, check both available sizes before purchasing.
Health and Fitness Tracking Capabilities
All current Apple Watch models track numerous health metrics continuously throughout the day. Heart rate monitoring works during rest, activity, and workouts, alerting you if your heart rate seems unusually high or low. Blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring measures oxygen saturation in your blood, which can indicate overall cardiovascular health and respiratory function. Temperature sensing monitors your wrist temperature, which can help track certain health patterns over time.

The ECG (electrocardiogram) app on Series 9 and Ultra 2 captures your heart's electrical activity and can detect irregular heart rhythms like atrial fibrillation. This feature requires you to hold your finger on the Digital Crown for about 30 seconds. The ECG results include categories like "Normal," "Low Heart Rate," "High Heart Rate," or "Irregular Rhythm." While not a medical device for diagnosis, it provides information you can discuss with healthcare providers.
Sleep tracking monitors how long you sleep and what sleep stages you experience (core sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep). This information appears in the Health app on your iPhone, helping you see patterns over time. Fall detection uses accelerometers to sense sudden drops and asks if you need help, contacting emergency services if you don't respond within a minute. Crash detection, available on Series 9 and Ultra 2, recognizes severe car accidents and can contact emergency services automatically.
Fitness tracking covers numerous workout types: running, walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, HIIT, pilates, rowing, stair stepping, and many others. During workouts, the watch displays real-time metrics like pace, distance, calories, and heart rate zone. The Workout app lets you set goals for distance, time, or calories, with notifications when you reach milestones. After workouts, detailed summaries show your performance data, which syncs to the Health app on your iPhone for long-term trend analysis.
Women's health tracking includes menstrual cycle predictions and logging. The watch learns your cycle patterns over time and notifies you of predicted fertile windows and upcoming periods. Fertility window predictions adjust based on your logged data, becoming more personalized over time.
Practical Takeaway: Review which specific health features matter to you—ECG and crash detection are Series 9/Ultra 2 advantages, while basic heart rate, blood oxygen, and sleep tracking appear on all models including the SE.
Performance, Battery Life, and Connectivity
The Series 9 uses Apple's S9 chip, a processor designed specifically for wearables that handles app performance, health calculations, and sensor processing. The Ultra 2 uses the same S9 chip but in a more powerful configuration. The SE uses the S8 chip from the previous year, which remains capable for most daily tasks though slightly less powerful. The difference in real-world performance is noticeable mainly when launching apps or processing intensive calculations, which happens less frequently on a watch than on an iPhone.

Battery life differs between models and depends on usage patterns. The Series 9 typically provides about 18 hours of battery life under normal use, meaning one full day before requiring a charge. Heavy use—extensive workout tracking, frequent app usage, or constant screen-on time—reduces this to 16 hours or less. The SE offers similar battery performance. The Ultra 2 manages about 36 hours of battery life on a single charge, roughly double the others, with an ultra-low power mode available that extends this further.
All current models charge using a magnetic charging cable that connects to a power adapter. The Series 9 and SE charge similarly, typically reaching full battery in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The Ultra 2 charges slightly faster due to its larger battery and optimized charging system. Fast charging capabilities let you reach 80% charge relatively quickly, useful when you need the watch ready soon.
Connectivity options include Bluetooth for connecting to your iPhone, Wi-Fi for internet access when away from your phone, and cellular options on certain models. The cellular version (available for Series 9 and Ultra 2 in certain configurations) lets you make calls, send messages, and stream data without your iPhone nearby, though it requires a separate cellular plan through your carrier. The SE does not offer cellular capability. All models support NFC for contactless Apple Pay payments.
GPS capability appears on all models, tracking your location during outdoor workouts. The Ultra 2 offers dual-frequency GPS (L1 and L5 bands), providing more accurate positioning in challenging environments like canyons or dense urban areas.
Practical Takeaway: If you want minimal daily charging, the Ultra 2's two-day battery life is significant. For most people, the Series 9 and SE's daily charging routine fits normal usage. Decide whether cellular connectivity matters to you, as it affects both price and ongoing costs.
