Understanding Money Orders and Where to Cash Them
A money order is a paper document that works like a check. It represents a specific amount of money that has already been paid for in advance. Unlike a personal check, which draws money from your bank account, a money order is purchased with cash or a debit card at the time you create it. This makes money orders useful when you need to send money to someone but don't have a checking account or prefer not to share your banking information.

Money orders come from several types of businesses. The most common places to purchase and cash them include Western Union, MoneyGram, post offices, grocery stores, check-cashing services, and some banks. Each organization that issues money orders also cashes them, though they may charge a small fee. The fees typically range from 50 cents to $5 depending on the money order amount and the location cashing it.
There are important differences between cashing a money order you received and cashing one you purchased. When you cash a money order someone sent to you, you're converting it into cash or depositing it into a bank account. The process is straightforward for most institutions. When you want to cash a money order you purchased yourself, the rules may vary depending on where you bought it and whether you still have your receipt.
Money orders have specific characteristics that matter when cashing them. They include the issuer's name, the amount, a serial number, the date, the recipient's name, and the sender's name. The recipient's name must match the person cashing it, or the money order cannot be processed. This is a security feature that prevents someone else from cashing your money order if it's lost or stolen.
Practical takeaway: Before attempting to cash a money order, confirm you are the named recipient and that you have the original document. If you're unsure whether a money order is legitimate, contact the issuing organization directly using their official phone number or website to verify.
Preparing Your Money Order for Cashing
Before you take your money order to a cashing location, you need to prepare it properly. The first step is to check that all information on the money order is correct. Look at the amount, the date, the payee name (the person who is supposed to cash it), and the sender information. Mistakes on these details can prevent the money order from being cashed.

The back of the money order has a section called the endorsement area. This is where the person cashing the money order must sign their name. Your signature should match the name printed on the front where it says "payee" or "pay to the order of." If your name on the money order is spelled differently than your legal name, you may need to sign both ways or bring identification showing both names. Some institutions require a thumbprint or additional identification information on the back as well.
Gather all documents you might need to bring along. Your government-issued photo identification is essential. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. If you don't have a photo ID, many locations will accept other forms of identification such as a utility bill or lease agreement that shows your name and current address. Having your receipt from when the money order was purchased is also helpful, though not always required.
Check the condition of the money order itself. It should be clean, readable, and free from major damage. Tears, water damage, or markings across important information may cause problems. If the money order is damaged or the printing is unclear, contact the issuing organization before attempting to cash it. They can help you understand whether the document can still be processed.
Practical takeaway: Review your money order at home before going to cash it. Make sure your name is spelled correctly as the payee, sign the back, and gather your ID. This preparation step prevents delays and rejected transactions at the cashing location.
Finding Places to Cash Your Money Order
Multiple locations in your area can cash money orders. The United States Postal Service (USPS) cashes money orders at post offices nationwide. Fees for cashing a money order at the post office typically range from $1.00 to $1.75, and the service is available during regular business hours. Post offices are often convenient because they have many locations, and many are open on Saturdays. You do not need to have a postal service account to cash a money order there.

Western Union and MoneyGram are financial services companies with thousands of locations across the country. You can cash money orders at their retail locations, which include grocery stores, drugstores, and convenience stores like Walmart, Target, and CVS. These services often charge fees between 50 cents and $3 depending on the money order amount. Both companies have online location finders on their websites where you can enter your zip code to find nearby cashing locations.
Traditional banks and credit unions that you have an account with will usually cash money orders for free or for a small fee if you deposit it into your account. If you don't have a bank account, some banks still cash money orders for non-customers, though they may charge a higher fee—sometimes $5 or more. It's worth calling ahead to ask about their specific policies and fees.
Check-cashing stores and liquor stores that offer financial services can cash money orders. These locations often have longer hours than banks and post offices, including evenings and weekends. Fees at these locations vary widely, typically ranging from $2 to $5 or occasionally higher. Before using a check-cashing store, compare their fees to other options since costs can add up.
Practical takeaway: Call or visit several cashing locations near you to compare their fees before deciding where to cash your money order. A difference of a few dollars matters, especially if you're cashing multiple money orders. Check locations' hours to find one that fits your schedule.
The Money Order Cashing Process Step-by-Step
When you arrive at a location to cash your money order, bring your prepared money order and government-issued photo identification. Walk up to the counter or window where money services are handled. Tell the staff member that you would like to cash a money order. Hand them the money order and your ID. In most cases, this is all you need to do.

The staff member will examine the money order to verify that it's authentic and that the information is complete and correct. They will check that your name matches the payee name on the document. They may look at the serial number or run the money order through a verification system to confirm it hasn't already been cashed. This verification process typically takes just a few minutes.
If everything checks out, you'll be asked how you want to receive your money. You can usually choose to receive cash, have it added to a prepaid card, or transfer it to your bank account if the location offers that service. Many people choose cash because it's the most straightforward option. If you choose cash, the staff member will count out the money and give it to you, minus any fees the location charges.
If there's a problem, the staff member will let you know what the issue is. Common problems include the money order already being cashed, the amount being illegible, the payee name not matching your ID, or the money order being counterfeit. If the problem is something minor like a spelling variation in your name, the staff member may ask you to sign something or show additional identification. If the problem is more serious, you'll need to contact the money order issuer to resolve it.
Practical takeaway: Bring your money order and photo ID to the cashing location, but expect the process to take 5-15 minutes due to verification steps. If there's a problem with your money order, don't argue with the staff member—instead, get their name and the location's phone number, then contact the money order issuer's customer service line.
Fees, Costs, and Money-Saving Tips
Money order cashing fees vary by location and the amount being cashed. Postal Service fees are set nationally but increase with larger amounts. As of recent information, cashing a money order at the post office costs $1.00 for amounts up to $500 and $1.75 for amounts from $500.01 to $1,000. Western Union and MoneyGram fees depend on the specific location and can range from 50 cents for small amounts to $3 or more for larger ones. Private check-cashing stores often charge higher fees and may charge a percentage of the money order amount rather than a flat fee.
