Essential Ingredients and Where to Find Them

Prosecco forms the base of this cocktail and accounts for roughly 60% of the drink's volume. Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine produced primarily in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. Unlike Champagne, which must come from France's Champagne region, Prosecco can be produced in specified Italian areas using the Charmat method of carbonation. This method produces larger bubbles and a slightly less complex flavor than the traditional méthode Champenoise used for Champagne, but it also makes Prosecco more affordable—typically ranging from $12 to $25 per bottle for quality versions. When selecting Prosecco for your Hugo Spritz, look for bottles labeled "Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze" for higher quality, though standard Prosecco works well for this cocktail.
Hugo liqueur is the signature ingredient that gives this drink its name and distinctive elderflower character. This clear, lightly sweet liqueur originated in South Tyrol and contains elderflower essence combined with other botanicals. Hugo typically has an alcohol content of around 20% by volume. You can find Hugo liqueur at most liquor stores that carry a selection of Italian spirits. A 750ml bottle usually costs between $20 and $35. If Hugo isn't available in your area, the guide discusses elderflower liqueurs from other producers as alternatives, though the flavor profile will vary slightly.
Fresh mint serves as both a flavor component and a garnish. The guide explains that spearmint or peppermint work well, with spearmint being slightly more subtle. Fresh mint should smell fragrant and vibrant, with no browning or wilting on the leaves. The guide recommends purchasing mint within a few days of making your drink, or growing your own if you have outdoor or indoor space. Some people keep mint in water like fresh flowers to extend its shelf life.
Soda water provides carbonation and dilutes the drink to proper serving strength. The guide clarifies that soda water is plain carbonated water with no added sodium or flavoring, different from club soda (which may contain added minerals) or tonic water (which contains quinine and sweeteners). Standard soda water costs very little and is widely available in grocery stores, though some people prefer using a home carbonation system to reduce plastic waste.
Practical Takeaway: Visit your local liquor store with the ingredient list from the guide to see what's available in your area. This helps you understand pricing and make decisions about quality versus cost before you're ready to make the drink.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Mixing Your Hugo Spritz
The Hugo Spritz follows a specific order of assembly that affects both the visual presentation and the taste of the finished drink. The guide provides detailed instructions on how to combine ingredients to achieve the best results.

The first step involves preparing your glassware. The guide recommends using a large wine glass or cocktail glass that holds 12 to 16 ounces. You'll want to fill this glass with ice before you begin mixing. The size of the ice matters according to the guide—larger ice cubes melt more slowly than crushed ice, which means your drink stays cold without becoming watered down as quickly. Some people use specialty ice molds to create large cubes at home, though regular ice from your freezer works fine.
The second step is adding the Hugo liqueur to your iced glass. Standard recipes call for approximately 0.5 ounces (about 15 milliliters) of Hugo, which is roughly one tablespoon. The guide explains that you can adjust this amount based on how strong you prefer the elderflower flavor—using less if you want a lighter taste, or slightly more if you enjoy elderflower more intensely. The Hugo should be poured directly over the ice.
Next, you'll add the Prosecco. The standard ratio is about 2.5 to 3 ounces of Prosecco, which fills roughly one-third of your glass. Pour the Prosecco slowly to avoid excessive fizzing that could overflow your glass. The guide notes that the temperature of your Prosecco matters—chilled Prosecco (around 45 degrees Fahrenheit) works better than warm or room-temperature wine.
The fourth step involves adding soda water to fill most of the remaining space in your glass, typically 2 to 3 ounces depending on your glass size and how strong you want the drink. Pour the soda water gently to preserve the carbonation in both the Prosecco and the soda water.
Finally, you'll garnish with fresh mint and often a thin slice of lime or lemon. The guide explains the difference between different garnishing techniques—bruising the mint slightly releases more flavor, while leaving it intact keeps the presentation cleaner. Some people add a thin lime wheel for color and a subtle citrus element.
Practical Takeaway: Practice the mixing steps without alcohol first—just use water and soda water. This helps you understand the proportions and technique before you use actual ingredients, reducing the chance of mistakes when you're ready to make the real drink.
Understanding Flavor Profiles and How to Customize Your Drink

The elderflower flavor from the Hugo liqueur is the most distinctive component of this drink. Elderflower has a light, floral character with subtle fruity undertones—it's often described as having notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, and sometimes subtle stone fruit flavors like peach or apricot. This floral component is what makes Hugo Spritz different from other wine-based cocktails. Some people who aren't accustomed to floral flavors in drinks find this unusual at first, while others immediately enjoy it. The guide helps readers understand this flavor and explains how to adjust the amount of Hugo if they want more or less of the elderflower character.
Prosecco contributes bubbles, slight sweetness, and subtle fruit flavors. The guide explains that different Prosecco producers create slightly different flavor profiles—some emphasizing green apple and citrus notes, while others highlight stone fruit or even honey. Experimenting with different Prosecco brands can noticeably change your final drink, even if all other ingredients stay the same. This is one customization option the guide discusses.
The mint garnish adds a fresh, cooling element that balances the drink's sweetness and adds
