Understanding Walgreens Money Orders: What They Are and How They Work
A money order is a financial tool that works similarly to a check but offers certain advantages. When you purchase a money order at Walgreens, you're buying a document that represents a specific amount of money. The person who receives it can cash it or deposit it into a bank account, much like a regular check. Money orders have been used for decades as a safe way to send money through the mail or hand it directly to someone without needing to write a personal check.

Walgreens offers money orders at most of its store locations across the United States. The process is straightforward: you visit a Walgreens store, go to the money services counter, tell the associate how much money you want for the money order, provide payment, and receive the document. The money order will have a stub that you keep as a receipt, and the main portion goes to whoever you're sending it to or whoever you're paying.
Money orders differ from checks in several ways. A check draws directly from your personal bank account, while a money order is purchased with cash or a debit card at the time you need it. This means the recipient doesn't need to worry about whether the funds exist—they're already paid for. Money orders also work well for people who don't have a bank account or prefer not to share their bank information with others. They're useful for paying rent, making purchases from private sellers, sending money to family members, or paying bills when a check isn't accepted.
The cost of a Walgreens money order varies depending on the amount. Generally, small money orders cost less than larger ones. You'll want to check with your local Walgreens for current pricing, as fees can differ by location and change over time. Understanding these basic concepts helps you determine whether a money order fits your needs.
Practical Takeaway: Money orders provide a documented way to transfer funds without using checks or sharing banking information. Visit your local Walgreens to learn about current fees for the amount you need to send.
Step-by-Step Process for Purchasing a Money Order at Walgreens
Purchasing a money order at Walgreens involves a simple process that takes just a few minutes. First, determine the exact amount you need. Write down this number so you don't forget it when you're at the counter. It's important to get the amount right because money orders cannot be altered after they're issued—if you make a mistake, you'll need to purchase a new one.

Next, gather the payment method you'll use. Walgreens typically accepts cash, debit cards, and in some locations, credit cards for money order purchases. Having your payment ready will speed up the transaction. Head to your nearest Walgreens store and locate the money services desk. This is usually near the pharmacy or at the front of the store. Ask an associate for assistance in purchasing a money order.
Tell the associate the amount you need and provide your payment. The associate will fill out the money order with the amount you specify. You'll be asked to provide the name of the person or business that will receive the money order (the payee). Have this information ready. If you're paying a company like a utility or insurance provider, use their exact legal name. If you're paying a person, use their full name.
After the associate completes the money order, you'll receive two parts: the main portion that goes to the recipient and a stub for your records. Keep the stub in a safe place. It contains important information including the money order number, date, amount, and payee name. This receipt proves you purchased the money order and can be useful if you need to track it later or if there's ever a question about payment.
Review the money order before leaving the counter to ensure all information is correct. Check the amount, payee name, and date. If anything looks wrong, tell the associate immediately. Once you leave the counter, corrections become much more difficult.
Practical Takeaway: Have the recipient's name and exact payment amount ready before visiting the Walgreens counter. Keep your receipt stub for your records and verification purposes.
What Information You'll Need to Provide
When purchasing a money order at Walgreens, you'll need to provide certain information to complete the transaction. The most critical piece is the name of the person or organization receiving the money order. This is called the payee. You should have this name written down and ready to provide to the associate. For businesses, use the exact legal business name. For individuals, provide their full name as you know it.

Some situations may require additional information. If you're sending a money order through the mail to someone you don't know well, that person may ask you to include your name and address as the sender. This helps them confirm who sent the money. However, unlike checks, Walgreens money orders don't require your personal bank account information, which is one reason many people prefer them for payments to strangers.
You'll also need to decide how much money to send. Some money orders have maximum amounts, typically around $1,000, though this can vary. If you need to send more than the maximum, you can purchase multiple money orders. Think about the exact amount carefully—you cannot change it once the money order is issued.
Have a valid form of payment ready. Most Walgreens locations accept cash and debit cards. If you're using a card, bring the card with you. The associate may ask you a few questions about the purpose of the money order, which is standard practice for financial services. This is for fraud prevention and record-keeping purposes.
Bring any special instructions or payment details if you're paying a specific bill. For example, if you're paying rent or a utility bill, you might have an account number you need to include with the payment. Write this down so you don't forget it. Some money orders have space on the back for you to write additional information or account numbers.
Practical Takeaway: Gather the recipient's full name, the exact dollar amount, and any payment account numbers before visiting Walgreens. Prepare your payment method and bring a form of identification if requested.
When Money Orders Make Sense: Common Uses and Situations
Money orders serve many practical purposes in everyday financial transactions. One of the most common uses is paying rent. Many landlords and property management companies accept money orders as payment, and some even prefer them because they provide clear documentation of payment. When you pay with a money order, you have a receipt showing exactly when and for how much you paid, which is valuable proof if there's ever a dispute.

Another frequent use is paying bills when you don't have a checking account or prefer not to share your bank account information. Utility companies, insurance companies, and other service providers often accept money orders through the mail. This allows you to make payments without having a bank account or a credit card. People new to the country, those rebuilding their credit, or those who simply prefer not to use banks often rely on money orders for this purpose.
Money orders are also useful when buying from private sellers. If you're purchasing something online from an individual, through classified ads, or at a garage sale, the seller might ask for a money order instead of cash. Money orders reduce the risk for both parties: the buyer knows the money is committed, and the seller has documentation of the transaction.
Sending money to family members is another common application. Whether you're helping a relative in another state or another country, a money order can be a safer way to send funds than cash through the mail. The recipient simply needs to go to a store that cashes money orders—many retailers accept them, not just Walgreens.
Some people use money orders to manage their spending. By purchasing a money order for a specific amount, they can control how much they spend on a particular purpose. This can be helpful for budgeting or for setting aside money for a specific bill.
Money orders also work well for making deposits into bank accounts. If you receive a money order, you can deposit it just like a check. This makes money orders a flexible option for various financial situations.
Practical Takeaway: Consider using money orders for rent payments, bill payments without a bank account, purchases from private sellers, and sending money to family members. They provide clear documentation of your transaction.
Fees, Costs, and Comparing Money Order Options
The cost of a Walgreens money order depends primarily on the amount you're sending. Walgreens charges a small fee for this service, which is added to
