Understanding Global Entry and How the Appointment Booking System Works
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows pre-screened travelers to move through security faster when returning to the United States. The program requires an in-person appointment at one of CBP's enrollment centers located throughout the country. Rather than walking in without a scheduled time, travelers must book a specific appointment slot through the official CBP system.

The appointment booking process operates through CBP's online portal, which manages all available time slots across participating enrollment centers. Each center maintains its own calendar based on staff availability and facility capacity. The system shows which dates and times have openings, and travelers select the option that works best for their schedule. This structure helps CBP manage the volume of people coming in for interviews while reducing wait times.
Appointments typically last 10 to 15 minutes and involve a brief interview with a CBP officer. During this time, applicants provide biographical information, answer background questions, and have their fingerprints and photograph taken. The officer reviews travel history and background details to determine whether the person meets program requirements. After the appointment, there is a waiting period while CBP processes the application, which usually takes a few weeks.
Understanding how the appointment system functions is important because slots fill up quickly in popular locations and seasons. Major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Miami often have limited availability, with wait times ranging from several weeks to several months depending on the time of year. Less busy enrollment centers in smaller cities may have more open appointments. Knowing where centers are located and when they have availability helps people plan their booking strategy.
Practical Takeaway: Global Entry appointments are not walk-in; you must reserve a specific time slot through CBP's online system. Research which enrollment center is nearest to you and check its availability calendar before attempting to book.
Finding and Accessing the Official CBP Enrollment System
The official place to book a Global Entry appointment is through the Trusted Traveler Programs portal, which CBP maintains at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov. This website is the only official source for scheduling appointments. It is not run by a private company or third-party contractor—it is directly operated by CBP. Accessing the portal requires creating an account with a username and password, or using an existing login if you have applied for another CBP trusted traveler program in the past.

When you first visit the portal, you will be prompted to create an account or sign in. The account creation process asks for basic personal information including your name, email address, date of birth, and passport information if you have one. After your account is created, you can navigate to the appointment scheduling section. The portal displays all enrollment centers and their current availability. You can filter by state, city, or by the type of program you are interested in, which helps narrow down options.
The website is designed to be straightforward, though it can experience slow performance during peak times like early morning or mid-week when many people are attempting to book simultaneously. The system occasionally shows "no appointments available" even though slots may open up throughout the day as cancellations occur. Some enrollment centers release additional appointment slots on specific days or times, so checking back periodically can reveal new openings.
It is important to note that third-party websites or services that claim to help with Global Entry bookings are not affiliated with CBP and should be approached with caution. Some charge fees for information that is freely available on the official CBP portal. Using the official CBP system ensures you are getting accurate information directly from the government agency running the program.
Practical Takeaway: Go directly to ttp.cbp.dhs.gov to search for and book appointments. Create a free account using your email and personal information. Avoid third-party booking services that charge fees, as the CBP portal is free to use.
What Information and Documents You Will Need When Booking
Before beginning the appointment booking process, gather the documents and information you will need. At minimum, have your valid U.S. passport or passport card available, as you will need the number and issue date. If you do not have a passport, you can still book an appointment, but the CBP officer will need to see valid government-issued identification at your in-person appointment. A driver's license, state ID card, or military ID will work for this purpose.

You will also need your current mailing address and a phone number where CBP can reach you. CBP will use this information to send appointment confirmation details and any updates if your appointment needs to be rescheduled. Having your Social Security number ready is also necessary, as CBP uses this for background checks. Make sure the information you provide matches government records as closely as possible to avoid delays.
If you have lived at multiple addresses in the past five years, prepare a list of those addresses and the dates you lived at each one. Similarly, if you have traveled internationally in the past few years, gather information about those trips, including the countries you visited and approximate dates. CBP may ask about your travel history during the appointment, so having this information readily available helps you answer questions accurately during your interview.
Additionally, review the specific requirements for Global Entry to understand what information the CBP officer may ask about. The program has certain criteria related to criminal history, immigration status, and customs violations. While gathering documents, it can be useful to review information about these requirements on the CBP website so you understand what the officer may discuss during your appointment. This preparation helps ensure your appointment runs smoothly.
Practical Takeaway: Before booking, gather your passport number, current address, phone number, Social Security number, and any previous addresses from the past five years. Have information about recent international travel ready, and review CBP's Global Entry requirements on their website.
Strategies for Finding Available Appointment Slots
Finding an available appointment slot can be challenging, particularly in major metropolitan areas where demand is high. One strategy is to search enrollment centers outside your immediate area if you have flexibility with travel. For example, someone in New York City might find much shorter wait times at an enrollment center in a nearby smaller city like Buffalo or New Jersey. While this requires additional travel, it can reduce the waiting period by weeks or even months compared to Manhattan locations.

Timing your search is another important factor. Appointment slots often open on specific days or times as CBP releases batches of availability. Many people report that checking early in the morning, particularly on weekdays, increases the likelihood of finding open slots. Mid-week appointments are generally easier to find than weekend slots, as fewer people tend to schedule appointments on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. The CBP portal updates throughout the day as cancellations occur, so checking multiple times over several days can reveal new openings.
Setting flexible dates in your search can also help. If you are willing to wait two or three months rather than seeking the soonest possible appointment, you will see more available options than if you filter for appointments in the next few weeks. Some people find that booking an appointment three to four months out is more successful than repeatedly checking for imminent openings. Once an appointment is booked, you can request to be moved to an earlier date if one becomes available closer to your original appointment time.
Another approach is to check the CBP portal periodically over several weeks rather than only once or twice. People frequently cancel appointments, especially as travel plans change. If you check the system several times per week, you increase your chances of finding a cancellation slot that opens up. Some travelers find success by setting reminders to check the portal on certain days, making it part of a regular routine rather than a one-time effort.
Practical Takeaway: Expand your search to enrollment centers in nearby areas to find faster availability. Check the CBP portal multiple times per week, particularly early in the morning and mid-week. Consider being flexible with your appointment date if possible—slots further in the future are more likely to be available.
What Happens After You Book Your Appointment
Once you successfully book an appointment through the CBP portal, you will receive a confirmation that displays your appointment date, time, and location. This confirmation will be sent to the email address you provided when creating your account. You should save this confirmation email or print it for your records. Some people also add the appointment to their calendar with a reminder a day or two before the scheduled time.

Arriving early to your appointment is recommended. CBP suggests arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Bring the confirmation details with you, along with valid government-issued identification and your passport if you have one. The CBP officer
