WIC is designed for pregnant women (including up to six weeks after giving birth), breastfeeding mothers, non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to one year after birth), infants, and children under age five. The program has income limits based on federal poverty guidelines. According to the USDA, the maximum income limit for WIC is 185 percent of the federal poverty line, though individual states may set lower limits.
The guide explains that if you think you may be within the income range, you can contact a local clinic to discuss your specific circumstances. The clinic staff can explain what documentation they typically request and how they evaluate requests. Participation typically involves attending appointments at a clinic, where a staff member reviews information with you and provides nutrition information.
Once someone is part of the program, they receive WIC benefits loaded on a card or through another payment method. These benefits can be used at authorized food stores to purchase specific foods. The guide usually includes examples of foods that WIC covers, such as:
- Milk and dairy products (yogurt, cheese)
- Eggs
- Beans and legumes (dried or canned)
- Peanut butter
- Whole grain breads and cereals
- Fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables
- Infant formula and baby cereal
The guide makes clear that WIC benefits cannot be used to buy all foods—items like soda, candy, prepared meals, or meat are not covered. Understanding which foods are included helps you plan your shopping at participating stores.
Practical Takeaway: Review the list of covered foods in the guide to understand what WIC purchases support, and keep in mind that clinic staff can answer specific questions about your personal situation and circumstances.
Nutrition Education and Services Available Through WIC

Most WIC programs require participants to attend nutrition education sessions. These sessions may cover topics such as building healthy meals for your family, choosing nutritious foods on a budget, preparing foods to retain nutrients, and feeding babies and young children. Clinics may offer these classes in groups, in one-on-one appointments, or sometimes through online formats.
For pregnant women, clinics often provide information about nutrition during pregnancy, healthy weight gain, and preparation for breastfeeding. For new mothers, WIC staff can share information about breastfeeding and lactation support resources. Many WIC programs have staff who specialize in breastfeeding support and can connect families with lactation consultants.
Clinics typically offer referrals to other health and social services in the community. If you need information about pediatrician services, immunizations, housing assistance, or other programs, WIC staff can point you toward local resources. The guide explains what these referral services are and how they connect to the overall WIC program.
The guide may also describe special services for specific populations. For example, some clinics offer services in multiple languages to serve diverse communities in Essex County. Staff can work with you in your preferred language to ensure you understand the program and nutrition information being shared.
According to the USDA, research shows that WIC participants demonstrate improved nutrition outcomes, higher rates of breastfeeding, and better health outcomes for infants and children compared to similar groups who do not participate in WIC.
Practical Takeaway: Understand that WIC involvement includes more than just receiving food benefits—it includes nutrition education and connections to other health services that can support your family's wellbeing.
