What Are Dental Implants and How Do They Work
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium, a metal that bonds well with bone. When you lose a tooth, the bone underneath begins to shrink over time because there is no longer a root stimulating it. A dental implant replaces that missing root by being surgically placed into your jawbone. Once the implant heals and integrates with the bone—a process called osseointegration that typically takes three to six months—a crown (the visible part of the tooth) is attached on top.

The three main parts of a dental implant are the fixture (the screw-like part inserted into the bone), the abutment (a connector piece), and the crown (the artificial tooth you see). This three-part structure mimics how natural teeth work. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants don't rely on neighboring teeth for support, and they function much like your original teeth.
Dental implants are used in many situations. Single missing teeth can be replaced with one implant and crown. Multiple missing teeth might use implants with bridges or dentures attached. In cases where someone has lost all their teeth, four to six implants can support a full denture that feels and works like natural teeth.
The success rate for dental implants is generally between 90 and 95 percent, according to dental research. However, success depends on factors like bone quality, overall health, smoking status, and how well you care for the implant after placement. People with good oral hygiene and healthy gums tend to have the best outcomes.
Practical Takeaway: Understanding the basic structure and function of implants helps you discuss options with your dentist. Dental implants replace the entire tooth structure—root and crown—making them different from other tooth replacement methods.
The Dental Implant Process: What to Expect Step by Step
The dental implant process involves several stages and typically takes six months to a year from start to finish. The first step is a consultation with a dentist or oral surgeon. During this visit, your dentist will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and possibly order a CT scan to see the quality and amount of bone in your jaw. This helps determine if you have enough bone to support an implant or if bone grafting is necessary first.

If bone grafting is needed, this happens before implant placement. Bone grafting involves adding bone material (from your own body, a donor, or synthetic material) to areas where bone is too thin or weak. This step can add two to nine months to the overall timeline, depending on how much bone needs to grow back.
The actual implant surgery is the next step. Your dentist or oral surgeon will make a small cut in your gum, drill into the jawbone, and place the titanium implant. This outpatient procedure usually takes one to two hours. Most people report mild discomfort rather than pain, and numbing medication is used throughout. After surgery, you'll need a few days to recover—most people return to normal activities within a week.
Following surgery, the implant must integrate with the bone. This osseointegration process typically takes three to six months (sometimes longer in the lower jaw). During this time, your dentist may place a temporary tooth so you don't have a visible gap. Once integration is complete, your dentist takes impressions and sends them to a lab where your custom crown is made.
The final step is crown placement. Your dentist removes the temporary tooth and attaches the permanent crown to the abutment. This is usually a quick procedure that takes less than an hour. Your new tooth should feel natural and function like your other teeth.
Practical Takeaway: The implant process takes time but unfolds in clear stages. Understanding each stage helps you plan your schedule and know what to expect, making the experience less stressful.
Who Might Be a Candidate for Dental Implants
Most people who have lost teeth can explore whether implants might work for them, but certain health and dental factors matter. You need adequate jawbone to support the implant. If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting can sometimes create enough bone for an implant to be placed, though not in every situation.

Your overall health affects implant success. People with uncontrolled diabetes, severe heart disease, or certain bone disorders may face higher risks. However, many people with managed diabetes, heart conditions, or other health issues have successful implants. Your dentist will review your medical history and may consult with your doctor to determine if implants are suitable for you.
Smoking significantly increases implant failure rates and slows healing. If you smoke, your dentist will discuss this risk with you. Some dentists require patients to quit smoking or at least reduce it substantially before placing an implant.
Your age doesn't automatically prevent you from getting implants. Younger patients need to have finished growing (usually after age 17 or 18), but older adults can get implants if their bone and overall health support it. Many people in their 60s, 70s, and beyond have successful implants.
Gum disease must be treated before implant placement. Implants need healthy gums to succeed. If you have active gum disease, your dentist will treat it first through cleaning and possibly medication or specialized procedures.
Commitment to oral hygiene is important. Implants don't get cavities like natural teeth, but they can fail if you don't keep them clean and visit your dentist regularly. You'll need to brush, floss, and attend dental checkups to maintain your implant long-term.
Practical Takeaway: Many people might consider implants for missing teeth. Discussing your health history, bone structure, and oral habits with your dentist helps determine whether implants could work in your specific situation.
Costs, Insurance, and Payment Options for Dental Implants
Dental implants are a significant investment. The cost for a single implant, abutment, and crown typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,000 in the United States, though prices vary by region and dentist. In the Attleboro area, costs generally fall within this range. If bone grafting is needed, add $1,000 to $3,000. If you need multiple implants or a full mouth of implants, costs increase substantially—full mouth implants can range from $15,000 to $30,000 or more.

Dental insurance coverage for implants varies widely. Traditional dental insurance often doesn't cover implants because they're considered cosmetic or elective procedures. Some insurance plans cover a portion of the crown or abutment but not the implant fixture itself. A small number of plans offer limited implant coverage. The best approach is to contact your insurance company directly and ask about your specific policy's implant coverage.
Many dental offices in Attleboro offer payment plans to make implants more affordable. These plans allow you to pay over time rather than paying the full amount upfront. Some offices work with third-party financing companies that offer medical credit cards. These cards have promotional periods with zero percent interest if you pay off the balance during the promotion period.
Some people use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to pay for implants. These accounts let you set aside pre-tax money for medical and dental expenses, which can reduce your overall cost.
If cost is a major concern, discuss options with your dentist. Some offices offer discounts for multiple implants or have different payment structures. You might also explore whether alternatives like dentures or bridges make sense for your situation, as these typically cost less than implants.
Practical Takeaway: Implants cost more than other tooth replacement methods, but many payment options exist. Contact your insurance company and talk with your dentist about financing to understand your actual out-of-pocket costs.
Caring for Your Dental Implant After Placement
Caring for a dental implant is similar to caring for natural teeth, but with some important specifics. You'll brush your implant crown with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice daily, just as you would natural teeth. The crown itself won't get cavities, but the gum and bone around it can develop problems if plaque builds up.
