What Are Amtrak All-Inclusive Train Packages?
Amtrak all-inclusive train packages are vacation options where train travel, accommodations, meals, and activities are bundled together into one price. Rather than booking each component separately, passengers purchase a complete package that typically covers the entire journey from start to finish. These packages are designed to simplify travel planning by organizing multiple elements of a trip into a single reservation.

Amtrak operates several routes across the United States that offer these packages. The most well-known include the Coast Starlight (running between Seattle and Los Angeles), the Empire Builder (connecting Chicago to Seattle), the Southwest Chief (linking Chicago to Los Angeles), and the Texas Eagle (traveling through the south-central United States). Each route has distinct characteristics, scenery, and package options that vary by season and availability.
The structure of these packages typically includes a cabin or sleeping car accommodation, which means passengers have a private or semi-private room on the train. Meals are included and served in the dining car, where passengers can experience sit-down service with other travelers. Some packages incorporate hotel stays at the beginning or end of the journey, allowing travelers to explore cities like Seattle, Chicago, or Los Angeles. Activities and excursions at various stops along the route may also be included, such as guided tours in national parks or visits to regional attractions.
Pricing for all-inclusive packages varies significantly based on the route, travel season, cabin type, and package length. A typical multi-day package might range from $1,000 to $4,000 per person, though premium options and peak-season travel can exceed this range. Off-season packages tend to be less expensive than summer travel. Cabin size and amenities affect pricing, with larger suites commanding higher prices than standard sleeping compartments.
Practical takeaway: Research the different Amtrak routes available and understand which packages align with your preferred destinations and travel style. Visit Amtrak's official website to review current packages, route maps, and seasonal availability to determine which option interests you most.
How Pricing and Package Options Work
Amtrak structures its all-inclusive packages in several ways to accommodate different travel preferences and budgets. Packages are typically organized by route and season, with pricing adjusting based on demand. Peak seasons—generally summer months and holiday periods—command higher prices than shoulder seasons (spring and fall) or winter months. Understanding how these pricing structures function helps travelers make informed decisions about when and how to book their journey.

Most all-inclusive packages include several components in their base price. The train ticket itself covers transportation between major cities on the route. Sleeping car accommodation provides a private or semi-private space for nighttime travel, which is essential on longer routes that span multiple days. Meals included in the package are typically served in Amtrak's dining car, offering sit-down service with tablecloths, real dishes, and multi-course meals prepared onboard. Some packages feature additional amenities like access to a lounge car with complimentary beverages and snacks, or guided excursions at stops along the way.
Package lengths vary, with options ranging from 3-day trips to extended 7-10 day journeys. Shorter packages might cover a section of a route with overnight train travel and hotel stays at strategic points. Longer packages provide more comprehensive route coverage and additional activities. The number of destinations and experiences included in a package correlates with its price, though a higher price doesn't always mean proportionally more value for every traveler.
Cabin types available on Amtrak trains include Roomette (smaller, for one or two passengers with a toilet and sink), Bedroom (larger, for up to two passengers with a full shower), and Family Bedroom (spacious, accommodating up to four people). Premium Bedroom suites offer additional luxury. Each cabin type carries different pricing, and choosing the right size for your needs affects both comfort and total package cost. A family of four booking a Family Bedroom will have different per-person costs than two individuals in separate Roomettes.
Package variations also include different add-ons or experiences. Some packages feature wine-tasting events, national park tours, or special themed journeys (like holiday-season packages). Pre- or post-journey hotel stays in major cities can be bundled into packages, providing urban exploration opportunities before or after the train portion. These customization options allow travelers to tailor their experience to specific interests.
Practical takeaway: Compare package prices by calculating the per-person cost and breaking down what's included versus what you'd need to pay separately. Consider traveling during shoulder seasons if flexibility exists in your schedule, as prices are often substantially lower than peak summer and holiday periods.
What Meals and Dining Look Like on Amtrak Trains
Dining is a centerpiece of the all-inclusive Amtrak experience, with meals served in the traditional dining car where passengers sit at tables with tablecloths and napkins. Meals are prepared in an onboard kitchen, and the dining experience is meant to evoke classic train travel. For passengers in sleeping cars (which includes all-inclusive package holders), meals are included in the package price, representing significant value since dining car meals would otherwise cost $15-40 per person if purchased separately.

Breakfast service typically runs from approximately 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM and offers selections like eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, toast, and pastries. Beverages include coffee, tea, juice, and milk. Passengers receive a dining car reservation time, and seating is assigned by crew members, which often leads to meeting other travelers on the train. Many passengers report that dining car conversations become highlights of their journey.
Lunch service runs roughly from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM and includes sandwiches, salads, entrees, and soup. On some routes, lunch might be lighter than other meals, particularly on shorter segments. Selections vary by route and train, but passengers typically have 3-4 entree options to choose from, accommodating different dietary preferences.
Dinner service is the most elaborate meal, typically running from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Passengers receive a menu card listing appetizers, salads, entrees, sides, and desserts. Typical entrees might include beef, chicken, fish, or vegetarian options. Wine, beer, and other beverages are available for purchase. Dinner is accompanied by service, with courses served throughout the meal. This formal dining experience is distinctly different from the casual, self-service dining in coach cars and differentiates the all-inclusive experience.
Accommodations for dietary restrictions and preferences are possible but require communication with Amtrak when booking or well before departure. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other specialized diets can often be accommodated with advance notice. Passengers with severe allergies should communicate directly with Amtrak's customer service, as onboard accommodations may be limited for certain restrictions.
In addition to meal service, the lounge car provides complimentary beverages, snacks, and coffee throughout the day for sleeping car passengers. This car serves as a social hub and observation space, with large windows for viewing scenery. Some passengers spend significant time in the lounge car between meals, enjoying the social atmosphere and scenery.
Practical takeaway: Plan to embrace the dining car experience as a social component of your journey, as seat assignments often result in meeting other travelers. Communicate any dietary needs to Amtrak at booking or contact them several weeks in advance to ensure your preferences can be accommodated onboard.
