Understanding Sunburn: What Happens to Your Skin
Sunburn occurs when ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun damages the DNA in your skin cells. When you spend time in the sun without protection, UV rays penetrate the outer layer of your skin called the epidermis. Your body responds to this damage by increasing blood flow to the affected area, which causes the red, inflamed appearance you see with sunburn. This is actually your immune system's attempt to repair the damage and prevent further injury.

There are two types of UV rays that reach Earth's surface: UVA and UVB. UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburns, while UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to aging and skin cancer risk. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, just one blistering sunburn, especially during childhood, can increase your risk of melanoma by 50 percent or more. This makes understanding sunburn treatment and prevention critically important for your long-term skin health.
Sunburn severity ranges from mild to severe. A mild sunburn causes redness and mild discomfort that typically appears within a few hours of sun exposure. A moderate sunburn produces significant redness, swelling, and pain. Severe sunburn causes blistering, fever, chills, and severe pain—these symptoms require medical evaluation. Some people experience sun poisoning, which is a severe allergic reaction to sun exposure involving blistering, fever, and systemic symptoms.
The amount of time it takes to burn depends on several factors: your skin type, the intensity of UV rays, time of day, altitude, and reflection from surfaces like water, sand, and snow. People with fair skin burn more quickly than those with darker skin, though everyone can get sunburned. UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so limiting outdoor time during these hours significantly reduces burning risk. Understanding these factors helps you recognize why sunburn happened and how to prevent it in the future.
Practical Takeaway: Sunburn is your skin's response to UV damage. Recognizing the difference between mild redness and severe blistering helps you determine whether you need medical attention or can treat it at home with self-care measures.
First Aid Steps: What to Do Immediately After Sun Exposure
If you notice sunburn symptoms developing, taking action within the first few hours can reduce severity and discomfort. The first and most important step is to get out of direct sunlight and move indoors or into shade. Continued sun exposure will worsen the burn, so removing yourself from the UV source prevents additional damage. This should be done as soon as you notice redness or feel heat in your skin.

Cool your skin gently using lukewarm (not cold) water. You can take a cool bath or shower, though avoid very cold water as extreme temperature changes can shock your system and cause additional stress to burned skin. Some people use cool, damp cloths applied directly to burned areas. Spend 15 to 20 minutes cooling your skin. This helps reduce inflammation and provides pain relief. Avoid ice directly on skin, as this can cause frostbite-like damage to already-injured tissue.
After cooling, focus on hydration. Sunburn draws fluid to the skin's surface and away from the rest of your body, which can cause dehydration. Drink plenty of water—aim for more than your usual daily intake. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can increase dehydration. Proper hydration supports your body's ability to heal the damaged skin cells and reduces systemic effects like dizziness or headache that sometimes accompany severe burns.
Moisturize your skin while it's still slightly damp from cooling. Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers like aloe vera gel or unscented lotion. Aloe vera has been studied for sunburn treatment; research shows it may reduce inflammation and promote healing. Avoid products containing petroleum jelly, benzocaine, or lidocaine on initial burns, as these can trap heat and irritate damaged skin. Pat the moisturizer on gently rather than rubbing, as sunburned skin is extremely tender.
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Ibuprofen or naproxen can reduce both pain and inflammation when taken within a few hours of burning. Acetaminophen treats pain but does not reduce inflammation. Follow package directions for dosing. These medications make you more comfortable and may help you sleep better during recovery. If you have conditions that contraindicate these medications, consult your healthcare provider before taking them.
Practical Takeaway: The first few hours after sun exposure are critical. Getting out of the sun, cooling your skin, hydrating your body, and moisturizing burned areas sets the stage for faster, more comfortable healing.
Managing Pain and Discomfort During Recovery
Sunburn pain typically peaks 24 to 48 hours after exposure and gradually decreases over several days. During this period, managing discomfort is important for sleep quality and overall well-being. Beyond the pain relievers mentioned earlier, several other strategies can help. Wear loose, soft clothing made from natural fibers like cotton. Tight clothing rubbing against burned skin causes additional pain. Some people find it helpful to sleep on unburned areas of their body, though this isn't always possible with extensive burns.

Your environment matters significantly during recovery. Keep your home cool and use fans or air conditioning. Heat of any kind increases inflammation and discomfort. Avoid hot showers or baths—use lukewarm water only. Do not apply ice packs directly to skin, but you can wrap ice in a thin cloth and apply it briefly (five to ten minutes) if absolutely necessary for severe pain. Some people find that hydrating facial mists or cooling gels provide comfort when applied gently to burned skin.
Avoid further sun exposure entirely during recovery. This means staying indoors or remaining in shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) if you must go outside before healing is complete. Sun-damaged skin is more vulnerable to additional damage. Continued exposure during recovery can intensify symptoms and increase long-term damage risk. This restriction typically lasts until visible redness fades, which usually takes five to seven days for mild burns and longer for moderate to severe burns.
Do not pick at or peel flaking skin. As your skin heals, it naturally sheds damaged outer layers—this peeling is part of the healing process. Removing skin prematurely causes pain, increases infection risk, and can leave permanent scarring. Resist the temptation even though peeling skin may feel uncomfortable. Keeping skin moisturized can minimize the urge to pick by reducing the sensation of tightness.
Monitor for signs of infection or severe reaction. Infected burns may show increasing redness, warmth, pus, or red streaks extending from the burn site. Severe reactions include fever, chills, or blistering accompanied by systemic symptoms. These situations warrant medical evaluation. For mild to moderate sunburn, these complications are uncommon, but it's important to know when professional care is needed.
Practical Takeaway: Pain management during recovery focuses on environmental control, proper clothing, continued hydration, and resisting the urge to pick at healing skin. Most sunburn pain subsides significantly within a week with these basic measures.
Treating Blistering and Severe Sunburn
Blistering sunburn is more serious than simple redness and indicates significant skin damage. Blisters form when burned skin fills with fluid as part of the healing process. While blisters are your body's protective mechanism, they require careful handling to prevent infection. Do not pop blisters deliberately. Intact blisters provide a sterile barrier protecting healing tissue underneath. If a blister breaks on its own, gently clean the area with mild soap and water, pat dry, and cover with a clean bandage or sterile gauze if needed to prevent contamination.

For intact blisters causing discomfort, apply cool compresses and take pain relievers as directed. Keep the area clean and protected from friction. Wear breathable, loose clothing. If blisters are extensive, cover a large portion of your body, or if you develop signs of infection, medical evaluation is recommended. Healthcare providers can assess the extent of damage and provide treatments like topical antibiotics or sterile fluid removal if blisters become too large or uncomfortable.
Severe sunburn sometimes causes systemic symptoms beyond skin damage.
