Understanding Arizona Driver's License Replacement
An Arizona driver's license is an official form of identification issued by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). It shows your name, date of birth, address, and a photograph. The license allows you to drive a vehicle legally in Arizona and serves as proof of identity for various transactions.

There are several situations where you might need to replace your current license. Your license may be lost, stolen, damaged, or worn out. Arizona law requires that driver's licenses be renewed periodically—typically every 12 years for regular licenses, though commercial licenses and other types have different renewal schedules. Additionally, you may need a replacement if your name changes due to marriage, divorce, or other legal reasons. You may also need to replace your license if it has become faded, creased, or otherwise difficult to read.
The state of Arizona has specific procedures for handling license replacements. Understanding these procedures helps you know what to expect when you visit an ADOT office or use their services. The process differs slightly depending on whether you're replacing a license due to loss or damage versus updating it for a name change. Arizona also offers several ways to handle your replacement—in person, by mail for certain situations, or through online services for specific renewal types.
Replacement licenses in Arizona cost money, though the fee varies depending on your circumstances. The typical replacement fee is $12 for a regular identification card replacement, though if you're renewing your license at the same time, you'll pay the renewal fee instead. Understanding the costs involved helps you prepare for your visit and know exactly what to bring with you.
Practical takeaway: Before you head to an ADOT office, identify the reason you need a replacement. This determines which documents you'll need and which process you'll follow.
Required Documents for License Replacement
Arizona requires specific documents to verify your identity and residency when you replace your driver's license. These documents form the foundation of the replacement process. ADOT needs to confirm who you are, where you live, and that you have the legal right to hold a driver's license in Arizona.

For proof of identity, Arizona accepts several document types. You can use a passport, a birth certificate, a tribal identification card, or a military discharge document. If you were born outside the United States, you'll need your certificate of naturalization or your permanent resident card. These documents must be originals or certified copies—photocopies typically are not accepted. Your document must clearly show your full name and date of birth.
Proof of Arizona residency is also required. ADOT accepts documents such as a utility bill (electric, gas, water, or trash service), a lease or mortgage statement, a property tax bill, or a homeowners insurance policy. Your name and current Arizona address must appear on the residency document. The document must be recent—typically dated within the last 60 days. If you've recently moved, you may need to provide documentation showing your move to Arizona or within the state.
For name change situations, you'll need to provide the legal document showing your name change. This could be a marriage certificate, a divorce decree, or a court order for legal name change. These documents must be originals or certified copies and must clearly show both your former name and your new name.
Social security verification is part of the process. You may be asked to provide your Social Security number or documentation related to it. If you don't have a Social Security number, you'll need to provide documentation explaining your situation.
Practical takeaway: Gather all required documents before visiting an ADOT office. Make a checklist: proof of identity, proof of residency, and any documents related to name changes or special circumstances. This prevents multiple trips and saves time.
Where and How to Replace Your License in Arizona
Arizona offers multiple locations and methods for replacing your driver's license. The state operates Driver License Services offices throughout Arizona in cities and towns of various sizes. These are the primary locations where you can replace your license in person. According to ADOT, there are more than 40 Driver License Services offices across the state, making it convenient for residents in most areas to access services without traveling long distances.

In-person replacement at an ADOT office is the most common method. You'll visit the office during their business hours, bring your required documents, and complete the replacement process on site. Most ADOT offices operate Monday through Friday, with hours typically from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some locations may have extended hours or different schedules. Walk-ins are generally accepted, though some offices may have capacity limits during busy times. If you want to avoid waiting, some ADOT offices offer the ability to make appointments through their website or by calling ahead.
Mail-in replacement is available in limited situations. If your license was lost or stolen and you need a duplicate, you may be able to handle this by mail. However, not all replacement situations qualify for mail service. Mail-in requests typically take longer to process than in-person visits—usually 5 to 10 business days or more.
Online renewal is available for certain situations. If your license is simply expiring and you meet certain requirements (such as having no outstanding violations or address changes needed), you may renew online through ADOT's website. However, online renewal is limited to renewals, not replacements for lost or damaged licenses.
ADOT's website provides a Driver License Services office locator tool. You can enter your city or zip code to find the nearest office, see their hours, and sometimes schedule an appointment. This tool helps you plan your visit and understand wait times at various locations.
Practical takeaway: Visit the ADOT website to find your nearest Driver License Services office and check their hours. If you're replacing a license due to loss or damage, plan for an in-person visit. If your situation qualifies for mail-in or online options, explore those first to save time and effort.
Step-by-Step Process for License Replacement
The replacement process follows a clear sequence of steps. Understanding each step helps you know what to expect and prepares you for what comes next. The process is straightforward but requires attention to detail to ensure accuracy.

When you arrive at an ADOT Driver License Services office for an in-person replacement, you'll first check in at the front desk or kiosk. You may receive a number and be called when it's your turn, or you may be served immediately depending on how busy the office is. Have your documents ready and organized.
An ADOT staff member will review your documents to verify they meet the state's requirements. They'll check that your proof of identity is valid, that your residency document is recent and shows the correct address, and that any name change documents are in order. If any documents are unclear or missing, the staff member will let you know what additional information you need.
You'll complete an application form for your driver's license. This form asks for personal information such as your full name, date of birth, address, height, eye color, and emergency contact information. You'll also answer questions about your driving record and medical history. The form asks whether you've been convicted of any disqualifying offenses. Be honest and accurate on this form—false information can result in license denial or cancellation.
A photograph will be taken at the ADOT office. This photo becomes part of your official license, so you'll want to be present and look presentable. The ADOT staff will take the photo using their camera equipment—you cannot bring your own photograph.
You'll pay the required fee at the time of your replacement. The fee for a regular license replacement is $12. If you're also renewing your license (because it's expired or expiring soon), the renewal fee applies instead. Payment methods vary by office but typically include cash, credit cards, and debit cards.
After your documents are verified, your form is completed, your photo is taken, and payment is made, your license is processed. For in-person replacements, your new license is typically printed on site and you may receive it the same day. Some offices issue licenses immediately, while others may mail your license to you within a few days. Ask the staff member when you can expect to receive your new license.
Practical takeaway: Arrive early in the day if possible, bring all required documents organized and ready, complete the application form carefully, and ask before you leave when your new license will be available for pickup or mailed to you.
