Understanding Broward Driver License Renewal Basics
A Broward driver license serves as a government-issued identification document that proves your right to operate a motor vehicle in Florida. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) oversees all driver license issuance and renewal processes throughout the state, including Broward County. Your driver license has an expiration date printed on the front, and renewing it before that date passes is necessary to continue driving legally in Florida.

Florida driver licenses are typically valid for eight years from the date of issuance. However, if you are over 80 years old, your license may have a shorter validity period of four years. The DHSMV mails renewal reminders to drivers approximately 90 days before their license expires. These reminders include information about renewal options and important dates.
The renewal process in Broward County involves submitting documentation to verify your identity and residence, paying a renewal fee, and providing current information such as your address and any medical conditions that might affect your driving. You will also need to pass a vision screening, though many renewal types do not require a written or driving test unless you have specific violations or medical concerns on your record.
Broward County residents can renew their driver licenses through multiple channels: in person at a Driver License office, by mail, or through online renewal if you meet certain criteria. Understanding which option works best for your situation can make the process more straightforward. The renewal fee in Florida is $75.00 for an eight-year license for drivers under 80 years old.
Practical Takeaway: Check your current driver license to find the expiration date. Mark this date on your calendar and begin gathering required documents about 90 days before it expires. This gives you time to complete the renewal process without rushing.
Documents You Will Need for Renewal
Before visiting a Driver License office or preparing materials for mail renewal, you need to gather specific documents. The DHSMV requires proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and proof of residence. Having these documents ready beforehand prevents delays and ensures a smooth renewal experience.

For proof of identity, you can provide an unexpired U.S. passport, a U.S. military ID, a government-issued ID from another state, or your current Florida driver license if it is still valid (even if expired for renewal purposes). If your current license is expired by more than six years, you will need additional identity documents. A certified birth certificate is also acceptable as a primary identity document.
Proof of Social Security number can be provided through a Social Security card, a W-2 form, a 1099 form, a tax return, or a statement from the Social Security Administration. Any of these documents suffices; you do not need the original Social Security card itself.
Proof of residence is required to confirm where you live in Broward County. Acceptable documents include utility bills (electric, gas, water, or internet), lease or rental agreements, property tax receipts, mortgage statements, bank or credit union statements, vehicle registration, auto insurance policies, homeowners insurance policies, or government-issued mail from federal, state, or local agencies. The document must show your name and current address and be dated within 90 days of your renewal application.
If you have changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or court order, you will need to provide documentation of that name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Similarly, if you have medical conditions or take medications that affect your ability to drive safely, you may need to provide medical documentation or physician statements.
Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents and gather them all before you visit a Driver License office or mail your renewal. Keep copies of everything you submit for your records.
In-Person Renewal at Broward Driver License Offices
If you choose to renew your driver license in person, Broward County has several Driver License offices where you can complete the process. The main offices are located in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, and other municipalities throughout the county. You can find the complete list of office locations and hours on the DHSMV website.

To renew in person, visit your nearest Driver License office during business hours. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though some have extended hours or Saturday appointments. You do not need to schedule an appointment in advance at most offices, though some locations now offer appointment scheduling to reduce wait times. Checking the office's website or calling ahead can tell you whether appointments are available at your preferred location.
When you arrive, bring all required documents. A staff member will review your paperwork, verify your identity and residence, and confirm your Social Security number. You will take a vision test at the office. The staff will also take a new photograph for your license unless you are renewing by mail and chose not to update your photo. You will pay the $75.00 renewal fee at the office using cash, check, debit card, or credit card.
After payment and processing, you will receive a temporary driver license document that is valid for 30 days while your permanent license is being produced and mailed to your address. This temporary document allows you to drive legally in Florida immediately. Your permanent license typically arrives within 7 to 10 business days, though it may take longer during high-volume periods.
In-person renewal is recommended if your current license is expired by more than six years, if you have changed your name, or if you prefer to receive your new license quickly with a current photograph. It is also helpful if you have questions about your renewal or need guidance from DHSMV staff about your specific situation.
Practical Takeaway: Visit the DHSMV website to find Driver License office locations and hours near you. Call ahead to ask about current wait times and whether your office offers appointments. Bring all required documents to avoid making multiple trips.
Mail Renewal Process for Broward Residents
Mail renewal offers a convenient option for many Florida drivers who meet specific requirements. To renew by mail, your current driver license must not be expired by more than six years, your license must not have been suspended or revoked, and you must not have any medical conditions reported to DHSMV that would require a vision or medical examination.

To start mail renewal, obtain the application form from the DHSMV website or by calling 1-888-933-7247. The form is also available at any Driver License office. Complete the form with your current information, sign it, and gather your required documents. You will need proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, and proof of residence, just as with in-person renewal.
Mail your completed form and documents to the address provided on the form. Include a check or money order for $75.00 made payable to DHSMV. Do not send cash through the mail. If you are renewing by mail, you have the option to keep your current photograph on your license or to provide a new photograph. If you want a new photo, you can include a passport-sized photograph with your mailed documents.
Processing times for mail renewal typically range from 7 to 14 business days after DHSMV receives your materials. You will receive a temporary driver license form in the mail that is valid for 30 days while your permanent license is being produced. Your new license will arrive separately within 7 to 10 business days after processing. Keep your temporary license with you while driving until your permanent license arrives.
Mail renewal is not available if your license has been suspended, if you have medical conditions on file, or if your license has been expired for more than six years. In these cases, in-person renewal is required. Additionally, if you have changed your name, you must renew in person to provide original name-change documentation.
Practical Takeaway: If you meet the mail renewal requirements, this option saves time and a trip to the Driver License office. Send your documents via certified mail so you have proof of delivery, and keep the tracking number for your records.
Online Renewal Through Florida's Digital Services
Florida offers online driver license renewal for certain drivers through the DHSMV website. This option is the most convenient if you meet the requirements, as you can complete the renewal from home without visiting an office or mailing documents.
