Overview of Nordstrom Credit Card Options
Nordstrom offers two main credit card products designed for different shopping patterns and preferences. This guide covers the features, rewards structures, and terms associated with each card so you can understand what each one offers. The Nordstrom credit card and the Nordstrom Visa card serve different purposes, and understanding the distinction helps you make an informed decision about which might suit your spending habits.

The Nordstrom card is a store-specific card that works only at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations. The Nordstrom Visa, by contrast, is a Visa card that works anywhere Visa is accepted. Both cards share some similar rewards features but differ in spending flexibility and earning potential. Neither card charges an annual fee, which means there is no yearly cost to hold either card regardless of how much or how little you use it.
The cards are issued by TD Bank, N.A., a major financial institution. This means the terms, privacy policies, and account management follow standard credit card industry practices. You can manage your account online or through a mobile app, check balances, make payments, and review statements whenever you need to.
Many shoppers benefit from understanding both cards because some people hold both simultaneously—using the Nordstrom card for in-store purchases where they earn higher rewards and the Nordstrom Visa for everyday purchases outside of Nordstrom. This strategy allows you to maximize rewards across different spending categories. The guide sections below explore the specific rewards rates, benefits, and terms for each card.
Practical Takeaway: Before reading further, determine whether you shop primarily at Nordstrom or need a card for broader retail use. This will help you focus on the card option that aligns with your shopping patterns.
Nordstrom Credit Card Rewards and Purchase Benefits
The Nordstrom credit card rewards structure is based on how much you spend at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack each year. The card uses a tiered rewards system where your rewards rate increases as you reach higher annual spending thresholds. This means the more you spend, the better your rewards rate becomes for the remainder of that year.

At the base level, cardholders earn 2 points per dollar spent on all purchases at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. Once you spend $2,000 in a calendar year, your rewards rate increases to 3 points per dollar for the remainder of that year. If you reach $5,000 in annual spending, you earn 4 points per dollar for the rest of the calendar year. The highest tier activates at $10,000 in annual spending, giving you 5 points per dollar through December 31st.
Each point earned through the card can be redeemed for merchandise at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack. Generally, 100 points equals a $5 credit toward future purchases. This means your base 2 points per dollar translates to roughly a 1% return on spending, which increases to 1.5%, 2%, or 2.5% depending on which tier you reach. The tiered system rewards loyal Nordstrom customers who concentrate their spending at this retailer.
Beyond the points structure, Nordstrom card holders receive benefits on certain shopping events throughout the year. The card typically provides early access to Nordstrom sales and special shopping events. Cardholders also receive a birthday bonus, usually credited during their birthday month. These benefits are added features that complement the ongoing points earnings.
The card offers purchase protection on eligible items purchased with the card. Extended return periods may also apply to certain merchandise purchased with the card, though specific terms vary by product category and current policy.
Practical Takeaway: If you spend at least $2,000 annually at Nordstrom, you'll benefit from the increased rewards rates. Track your spending toward the next tier threshold to understand your potential rewards value.
Nordstrom Visa Card Rewards and Broader Benefits
The Nordstrom Visa card functions as a general-purpose credit card, meaning it can be used at millions of merchants that accept Visa, not just Nordstrom locations. This flexibility makes it valuable for people who want to earn rewards on everyday purchases across different retailers and categories.

The Nordstrom Visa card earns rewards at different rates depending on where you spend. At Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack, you earn 4 points per dollar spent—notably higher than the base rate on the regular Nordstrom card. On gas station purchases and restaurant transactions, you earn 3 points per dollar. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar. This structure encourages spending in specific categories while providing rewards on all other purchases.
Like the Nordstrom card, Visa card points are redeemed for statement credits or merchandise at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. The conversion rate remains approximately 100 points equals $5 in value, though specific redemption options may vary. The Visa card's broader earning rates mean you accumulate rewards faster on everyday expenses outside of Nordstrom, making it useful for people who shop at multiple retailers.
The Nordstrom Visa includes several travel-related benefits that the store card does not offer. These typically include travel accident insurance, emergency medical and dental services while traveling, and lost luggage reimbursement for trips charged to the card. These benefits can provide valuable protection during vacations or business travel.
The card also includes purchase protection and extended return privileges on eligible items, similar to the store card. Additionally, the Visa designation means you benefit from Visa's fraud protection and dispute resolution processes, which provide consumer safeguards across all merchants where Visa is accepted.
Practical Takeaway: If you spend significantly at gas stations, restaurants, or other retailers beyond Nordstrom, the Visa card's multi-merchant rewards structure may generate more total rewards value for your overall spending patterns.
Interest Rates, Fees, and Cost Structure
Understanding the financial costs associated with carrying a Nordstrom credit card balance is essential for making an informed decision. Both the Nordstrom card and Nordstrom Visa have variable interest rates, which means the rate you receive depends on current market conditions and your personal creditworthiness. As of recent years, both cards carry APRs (Annual Percentage Rates) that typically range from approximately 18% to 27%, though your specific rate depends on factors like your credit score and history.

A significant feature of both cards is that neither charges an annual fee. This is valuable because it means you can hold the card without ongoing costs, even if you use it occasionally or let it sit unused. Many premium retail and travel credit cards charge annual fees ranging from $95 to $500, so the no-annual-fee structure makes these Nordstrom cards accessible to a broader audience.
Other potential fees associated with the cards include late payment fees (charged if your payment arrives after the due date), balance transfer fees (charged if you transfer a balance from another card), and cash advance fees (charged if you use the card to obtain cash). These fees only apply if you engage in the specific transactions or miss payment deadlines, meaning you can avoid them through responsible account management.
Interest charges accumulate only if you carry a balance beyond your grace period. The grace period is the time between your statement closing date and your payment due date during which no interest accrues on purchases. By paying your full statement balance by the due date, you avoid interest charges entirely. This is one of the most effective ways to benefit from credit cards without bearing financial costs.
Promotional periods are occasionally offered on Nordstrom cards, which may provide 0% APR for a specific period on purchases or balance transfers. These offers vary by time and applicant, so checking the current terms is important when considering the card.
Practical Takeaway: Plan to pay your full balance monthly to avoid interest charges. If you carry a balance, the interest cost quickly outpaces any rewards earned, making the card more expensive than paying cash.
