Understanding Grasshopper Cocktails: History and Variations
The Grasshopper cocktail stands as one of the most recognizable crème liqueur-based drinks in bartending history. Created in the early 1900s, this drink gained significant popularity during the mid-20th century and remains a staple on cocktail menus worldwide. The original recipe combines equal parts of crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and heavy cream, resulting in a smooth, dessert-like beverage with a pale green color that inspired its insect-themed name.

The classic Grasshopper belongs to a category of drinks known as "cream cocktails" or "pousse café" variations. What distinguishes this drink is its layered potential and the balance between the mint and chocolate flavors. The original recipe typically calls for a 1:1:1 ratio of ingredients, though variations have emerged over the decades. Some bartenders prefer using white crème de cacao instead of dark crème de cacao, which creates a lighter, more delicate appearance. Others experiment with the ratio to emphasize either the mint or chocolate notes depending on personal preference.
Beyond the classic version, several notable variations exist. The Grasshopper Pie variation uses vodka instead of one of the cream components, creating a lighter texture. The Flying Grasshopper incorporates gin, while the Vodka Grasshopper substitutes vodka for one ingredient. Each variation maintains the essential mint and chocolate character while offering distinct flavor profiles. Regional interpretations also exist, with some establishments adding a splash of brandy or modifying the cream type based on local preferences and ingredient availability.
Understanding these variations helps home bartenders develop their palate and discover which versions suit their taste preferences. The Grasshopper's simplicity makes it an excellent starting point for learning about how liqueurs interact and blend together.
Practical Takeaway: Research the different Grasshopper variations online or in cocktail references to determine which version appeals to you before purchasing ingredients. This research prevents unnecessary spending on ingredients you may not use.
Essential Ingredients and Spirits for Grasshopper Cocktails
Creating authentic Grasshopper cocktails at home requires three primary ingredients: crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and heavy cream. Each of these components plays a crucial role in the final drink's flavor profile and texture. Understanding these ingredients individually helps you make informed purchasing decisions and potentially substitute similar products if needed.

Crème de menthe comes in two varieties: green and white (clear). Green crème de menthe provides the classic color and typically contains about 25% alcohol by volume (ABV). This ingredient delivers the distinct mint flavor that defines the Grasshopper. White crème de menthe offers identical flavor but without the green coloring, which some bartenders prefer for cocktails where appearance matters less or for creating specific visual effects. Popular brands include Bols, Luxardo, and Marie Brizard. A 750ml bottle typically costs between $12 and $20 at most liquor stores and yields approximately 25 cocktails per bottle.
Crème de cacao serves as the sweetening and chocolate-flavoring component. Like crème de menthe, this ingredient comes in dark (brown) and white (clear) versions, each containing about 24-25% ABV. The dark version offers richer chocolate notes with slight vanilla undertones, while white crème de cacao provides gentler chocolate flavor with more vanilla characteristics. Brands such as Bols, Luxardo, and Godiva crème de cacao are widely available. Expect to spend $12 to $22 per 750ml bottle, also yielding approximately 25 cocktails.
Heavy cream (also called heavy whipping cream) forms the final essential ingredient. This dairy product contains 36-40% milk fat, which creates the Grasshopper's signature smooth, creamy texture. Standard heavy cream comes unsweetened and unflavored. A pint of heavy cream typically costs $2 to $4 and provides enough for approximately 12 to 15 cocktails, depending on pour size.
Some bartenders keep additional items on hand to expand their Grasshopper repertoire, including vodka, gin, brandy, and simple syrup. These ingredients become relevant when making variations like the Flying Grasshopper or Vodka Grasshopper. Quality matters, but premium brands aren't necessary for home cocktail preparation. Mid-range spirits perform adequately in mixed drinks where they're combined with other flavors.
Practical Takeaway: Purchase a standard bottle of green crème de menthe and dark crème de cacao first, along with heavy cream from any grocery store. These three items will cost approximately $30 to $45 and provide materials for 12 to 15 complete cocktails, making the per-drink cost roughly $2 to $3.
Equipment and Tools You'll Need for Mixing
Proper equipment makes the difference between a well-mixed Grasshopper and a mediocre one. Fortunately, most home bartenders already possess the necessary tools, and those who don't can acquire basic equipment inexpensively. The essential items include a cocktail shaker, jigger, bar spoon, strainer, and glassware.

A cocktail shaker serves as your primary mixing vessel. Two main styles exist: the Boston shaker (two metal cups that fit together) and the cobbler shaker (a single metal cup with a built-in strainer and cap). The Boston shaker typically costs $10 to $25 and performs professionally, though it requires a separate strainer. The cobbler shaker costs $8 to $15 and offers all-in-one convenience but can be harder to master for beginners. Either option works effectively for Grasshopper cocktails. Some bartenders prefer a mixing glass with a bar spoon for stirred cocktails, though shaking works fine for this particular drink.
A jigger measures ingredients accurately, preventing waste and ensuring consistency between drinks. Standard jiggers feature two cups of different sizes—typically 1.5 ounces on one end and 0.75 ounces on the other. This tool costs $4 to $12 and proves invaluable for following recipes precisely. Without a jigger, freepour pouring (estimating quantities by sight and sound) may result in drinks that taste inconsistent.
A bar spoon has a long handle and twisted shaft, designed for stirring drinks in mixing glasses or pitchers. This tool costs $5 to $15 and works well for batching Grasshoppers or stirring ingredients before serving. A regular long spoon from your kitchen works in a pinch, though bar spoons are specifically weighted for this purpose.
A Hawthorne strainer (a metal strainer that fits into a shaker's mouth) or fine mesh strainer prevents ice chips and foam from entering the finished drink. These cost $5 to $10 and come with many shakers. A simple fine mesh kitchen strainer also works.
Glassware selection depends on your preferred serving style. Grasshoppers traditionally come served in cocktail glasses (also called martini glasses) or coupe glasses. These typically hold 4 to 6 ounces and cost $5 to $15 per glass at home goods stores. Some bartenders serve Grasshoppers in rocks glasses (short, wide glasses for spirit-forward drinks) or over ice in highball glasses, depending on personal preference. You can begin with glasses you already own—any glass that holds 6 to 8 ounces works adequately.
Additional nice-to-have items include a bar towel (for cleanup), mixing glass (for stirred preparations), and Lewis bag with mallet (for making quality ice). Ice quality matters for cocktails since lower-quality ice melts faster and dilutes drinks. If your tap water tastes good, standard ice maker ice works fine; if tap water tastes off, consider buying quality ice from a grocery store for approximately $2 per bag.
Practical Takeaway: Start with a basic cocktail shaker ($10-$15), a jigger ($5-$8), a strainer ($5), and glassware you already own. This minimal setup costs under $30 and provides everything needed to make excellent Grasshoppers at home.
