Luggage donation differs from other types of charitable giving because travel bags serve specific purposes. Organizations that accept luggage donations use these items to support people experiencing homelessness, individuals in transitional housing, foster youth, disaster relief efforts, and refugees or immigrants relocating to new communities. Understanding which local organizations accept luggage and how they use these donations helps you make informed decisions about where to donate your items.
This guide provides information about the types of organizations that typically accept luggage donations, how to find these organizations in your area, what condition luggage should be in before donating, and practical steps for the donation process. The guide does not determine whether specific organizations operate in your location or guarantee that particular agencies will accept your items. Donation policies and availability vary significantly by geographic location and change over time.
Learning about local luggage donation options requires some research on your part. You will need to contact organizations directly to confirm they accept luggage, understand their current needs, and learn about drop-off or pickup options available in your specific area. This guide provides the framework and resources for conducting that research.
Practical Takeaway: Before beginning your search for luggage donation options, inventory the travel bags you want to donate. Note the type (suitcase, backpack, duffel bag), size, and condition. This information helps you communicate with organizations about what you have available.
Types of Organizations That Accept Luggage Donations
Multiple categories of local organizations accept luggage donations, each serving different populations and community needs. Identifying which types of organizations operate in your area is the first step in finding appropriate donation destinations.

Homeless services organizations and shelters frequently accept luggage donations. Many shelters provide transitional housing and case management services to people working toward stable housing. Clients often need luggage for storing personal belongings or for traveling to job interviews, family visits, or new housing locations. Organizations like local homeless coalitions, emergency shelters, and transitional housing programs may accept donations of suitcases, backpacks, and duffel bags in good working condition.
Foster care and child welfare agencies represent another significant category of organizations accepting luggage donations. Foster youth frequently move between placements, and agencies report that children often transport their belongings in garbage bags or other unsuitable containers. Donations of backpacks and smaller luggage items help these young people maintain dignity during transitions. Organizations such as local foster care agencies, youth advocacy organizations, and foster care nonprofits may welcome these donations.
Refugee resettlement and immigration support organizations use donated luggage extensively. Individuals and families relocating to your area often arrive with minimal possessions and need storage solutions for their belongings. Local refugee resettlement agencies and immigrant support organizations typically work with newly arrived populations and may accept luggage donations to distribute to families in need.
Disaster relief organizations maintain donation networks for emergency response. When hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or other disasters affect your region or other areas, organizations coordinating relief efforts sometimes request luggage for distributing emergency supplies or helping displaced individuals transport their belongings. Local chapters of national disaster relief organizations may accept luggage donations during preparedness periods.
Goodwill, The Salvation Army, and other general thrift and charitable organizations accept luggage as part of their broader donation programs. While these organizations do not target luggage to specific populations like shelters do, they make these items available to the general public at low cost, which provides value to community members with limited budgets.
Practical Takeaway: Research which of these organization types operate in your specific community. Start with a search for "homeless services [your city]," "foster care agencies [your state]," and "refugee resettlement [your city]" to identify potential donation recipients in your area.

Online search engines provide a starting point for identifying local organizations. Searching "donate luggage [your city]" or "where to donate suitcases [your city name]" often returns results from local nonprofits, shelters, and thrift organizations. Additionally, searching for specific organization types—such as "homeless shelter [your city]," "foster care agency [your county]," or "refugee services [your city]"—helps you locate organizations that may accept luggage donations as part of their broader donation programs.
211.org is a national database of health and human services resources. This website allows you to enter your zip code and search for specific services. Searching for "homeless services," "foster care," or "refugee services" on 211.org often returns contact information for local organizations. Staff at these organizations can tell you whether they accept luggage donations and under what conditions.
Your local United Way chapter maintains information about nonprofit organizations working in your community. United Way websites often include searchable directories of member agencies. Contacting your local United Way office provides another way to learn about organizations that may accept luggage donations.
Direct contact with known local organizations is also effective. If you know of a homeless shelter, foster care agency, or refugee resettlement organization in your area, calling or visiting their website to ask about luggage donations is appropriate. Staff members can provide specific information about their donation policies and current needs.
Social media platforms and community Facebook groups sometimes share information about local donation opportunities. Many communities have active Buy Nothing groups, community boards, or neighborhood groups where members discuss local resources, including which organizations accept specific donations.
Contacting your local government's human services or community development department can also provide leads. These departments often maintain lists of nonprofits and community organizations working in your area.
Practical Takeaway: Create a simple spreadsheet with the names, phone numbers, websites, and addresses of at least three to five local organizations you identify. Note the contact information for someone at each organization who handles donations, making future communication easier.
Preparing Luggage for Donation
Organizations that accept luggage donations expect items to be in condition suitable for use. Understanding donation standards helps ensure your luggage actually reaches people who need it rather than ending up in landfills. While standards vary by organization, general guidelines apply across most donation programs.

Luggage should be clean and free of stains, odors, and visible dirt before donation. Organizations typically do not have resources to clean donated items extensively. A simple wash with mild soap and water, vacuuming the interior, and wiping down zippers and handles takes minimal time and significantly improves the condition. If luggage smells musty from storage, leaving it outside in fresh air for several days often eliminates odors.
All zippers, latches, and wheels should function properly. Organizations report that broken zippers represent the most common reason they refuse luggage donations, as repairs require tools and expertise many organizations lack. Test all zippers before donating to confirm they open and close smoothly. Wheels on rolling luggage should spin freely without wobbling. Latches should close securely without being bent or damaged. If wheels are broken or zippers are stuck, consider whether repair is worth your time and effort. For minor issues, some organizations may accept items anyway and complete repairs themselves, but it is best to call and ask before donating damaged luggage.
Remove all personal items, documents, or labels that identify previous owners. Check all pockets and compartments thoroughly. Some donors unknowingly leave items like boarding passes, receipts, or personal documents in luggage pockets. These should be removed completely. If luggage has identifying labels with your name or address, peel these off or cover them.
Luggage should have all original handles, straps, and structural components intact. Some larger suitcases come with detachable handles or straps; if you have these, include them with the donation. Avoid donating luggage missing handles, with cracked shells, or with significant dents that affect functionality, as these items have limited usefulness to recipients.
Soft-sided luggage should not have tears or holes in
