Understanding Your TurboTax Account and Why You Might Want to Delete It
TurboTax is tax preparation software owned by Intuit that helps people complete federal and state tax returns. When you create a TurboTax account, the platform stores your personal information, tax documents, and filing history. Understanding what an account contains and why someone might choose to delete it is the first step in the deletion process.

Many people create TurboTax accounts to file their annual tax returns. The software guides users through questions about income, deductions, and credits, then generates completed tax forms ready for submission to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Over time, as users file multiple years of returns through TurboTax, their accounts accumulate data from each filing season.
Common reasons people decide to delete their TurboTax accounts include switching to different tax software, concerns about data storage, account security issues, or simply wanting to reduce the number of online accounts they maintain. According to Intuit's 2023 reports, TurboTax serves approximately 30 million customers annually, meaning millions of users make account decisions each year.
Before deletion, it's worth noting that removing your account is different from simply not using it. Deleting an account permanently removes your stored information from TurboTax servers. This action cannot be undone, so you should download or save copies of important documents before proceeding. The IRS maintains its own records of filed returns, so deleting your TurboTax account will not affect tax records already submitted to the government.
Practical Takeaway: Before deleting your account, download copies of your tax returns, prior year information, and any other documents you may need in the future. The IRS keeps its own records, but having personal copies protects you if you need to reference past filings.
What Data TurboTax Stores in Your Account
When you create and use a TurboTax account, the platform stores various categories of personal and financial information. Understanding what data exists in your account helps you make an informed decision about deletion and ensures you don't lose important information you might need later.

TurboTax accounts typically contain personal identification information including your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and email address. The platform also stores financial information such as income amounts from W-2 forms, 1099 forms, business income, investment earnings, and other revenue sources. Additionally, accounts contain details about deductions you've claimed, tax credits you've used, dependent information, and mortgage or student loan details.
For users who file state returns through TurboTax, state-specific information is also retained. This may include state tax identification numbers, state income details, and state-specific deductions or credits. Users who have purchased additional TurboTax products, such as audit defense services or extensions, may have information about those transactions stored in their accounts as well.
Intuit's privacy policy, updated regularly and available on their website, outlines exactly what categories of information they collect. According to their documentation, the company retains user information to provide services, maintain account security, comply with tax law requirements, and for other business purposes. The retention period varies by data type and legal requirement.
If you've linked your TurboTax account to other platforms or services, information may also be stored about those connections. For example, if you connected your bank account for direct payment or used your TurboTax login to sign into related Intuit services, this connection information exists in your account.
Practical Takeaway: Review your account settings to see what personal and financial data Intuit has stored. Take screenshots or print pages showing your prior returns and financial information before deletion, in case you need to reference these details for future years or disputes.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Deleting Your TurboTax Account
The process for deleting a TurboTax account involves several steps and should be done carefully to ensure you don't lose important information. TurboTax does not offer a single-click deletion option, but rather requires users to go through a formal account closure process through their support system.

The first step is to log into your TurboTax account using your username and password. If you've forgotten your login credentials, TurboTax offers password recovery options through the login page. Once logged in, navigate to your account settings, usually found in the top right corner of the screen or within a menu labeled "My Account" or similar.
Within account settings, look for options related to account management or profile settings. TurboTax does not currently offer a direct "Delete Account" button in the regular settings menu. Instead, you will need to contact TurboTax support to request account deletion. This can typically be done through multiple channels: phone support, online chat, or email contact forms available on the TurboTax website.
When contacting support, explain that you want to permanently delete your TurboTax account. Have your account information available, including your email address and possibly your IRS identification number or other verification information. TurboTax support representatives will ask verification questions to confirm you own the account before processing the deletion request.
After submitting your deletion request, TurboTax may send a confirmation email to the address associated with your account. This email typically includes a link or instructions to confirm the deletion. Follow these instructions to complete the process. According to TurboTax documentation, account deletion is not instantaneous and may take several business days to fully process.
During the waiting period, your account will typically be marked for deletion but may still be visible or partially accessible. You may receive follow-up communications from TurboTax confirming that the deletion is underway. After the process completes, your personal information should no longer be accessible through your TurboTax account.
Practical Takeaway: Contact TurboTax support through their official channels and keep records of your deletion request, including reference numbers and dates. Document the deletion process so you have proof that you submitted the request, which may be useful for your records.
Important Information About Data Retention and Compliance
Even after you delete your TurboTax account, it's important to understand that certain information may not be immediately or completely removed from all Intuit systems. This is due to legal requirements and business practices common among financial software companies.

Tax law requires that certain records be maintained for specific periods. If you filed a tax return through TurboTax, the IRS itself maintains a copy of that return and related information. TurboTax, as a tax preparation service provider, may be required to retain records related to filed returns for a period determined by IRS regulations and tax law. This retention is separate from your personal account and exists for compliance purposes.
According to Intuit's privacy documentation, they may retain certain data for a period of time even after account deletion if required by law, for legitimate business purposes, or to resolve disputes. This is standard practice in the financial services industry. For example, if there are any pending disputes with TurboTax, if you've filed a tax return that is still under IRS review, or if there are unresolved billing issues, relevant information may be kept beyond account deletion.
Intuit also may retain anonymized or aggregated data that cannot identify you personally. This data might be used for statistical purposes, service improvement, or fraud prevention. This type of data retention is generally not considered a privacy concern since it cannot be linked back to your individual identity.
If you have concerns about how long specific information will be retained or want detailed information about data retention timelines, you can request this information directly from Intuit. They have processes for handling data subject requests and privacy inquiries. The specific retention timeline may vary depending on the type of data and the reason it's being retained.
Additionally, if you've been subject to an IRS audit or have had tax return issues, records related to those situations may be maintained separately and longer than standard records. The IRS typically has the ability to examine returns filed up to three years after filing, or longer if substantial errors are found.
Practical Takeaway: Understand that account deletion doesn't mean all your information disappears immediately. The IRS keeps its own records of filed returns, and TurboTax may retain information for legal compliance. If you need confirmation about what will be retained, contact Intuit directly for a detailed explanation.
