What Credit Cards With Low Deposits Actually Are
Credit cards with low deposits, sometimes called secured credit cards, work differently than traditional credit cards you might already know. Instead of the card issuer trusting you based on your credit history, you put down a cash deposit that becomes your credit limit. If you deposit $500, your card typically comes with a $500 limit. This deposit stays in a special account at the bank—you don't spend it directly.

The key difference from prepaid cards is important to understand. With a prepaid card, you load money onto the card and spend that balance down like cash. With a secured credit card, your deposit sits untouched while you use the credit card normally. You charge purchases, receive a bill, and make monthly payments just like any other credit card holder.
Banks offer these cards because they carry less risk. Your deposit protects them if you don't pay your bill. For consumers, secured cards serve a specific purpose: building or rebuilding credit history. When you make on-time payments, the card issuer reports this activity to credit bureaus. Over time, this payment history can help raise your credit score.
Many secured cards eventually transition to unsecured cards. After 7 to 24 months of responsible use, depending on the issuer's terms, you may receive your deposit back and get upgraded to a regular credit card. Some issuers will return your deposit while keeping the account open as a standard credit card.
Practical Takeaway: Secured cards are tools for credit building, not shortcuts. They require the same responsible payment habits as any credit card—spending within your means and paying bills on time. Understanding this distinction helps you evaluate whether this product matches your actual financial needs.
Understanding Deposit Requirements and Minimums
Deposit amounts vary significantly across different card issuers, ranging from as low as $200 to $2,500 or higher. Most commonly, you'll find cards requiring deposits between $200 and $1,000. The deposit you choose directly determines your credit limit, so a $500 deposit gives you a $500 limit.

Some card programs allow you to increase your deposit over time. For example, you might start with a $300 deposit, then add another $200 after six months of on-time payments, raising your limit to $500. This flexibility matters if you want to gradually build available credit without locking up a large sum upfront.
A few issuers offer what they call "low deposit" options—starting at $200 or $300. These programs target people who want to build credit but don't have large amounts of money to set aside. However, starting with a lower deposit means starting with a lower credit limit, which can feel restrictive if you have regular expenses.
The deposit itself typically earns little to no interest while held by the bank. Some issuers offer deposit accounts earning minimal interest—perhaps 0.01% annually—but this is rare. Essentially, your money sits in an account earning nothing. This is why deposit size matters: you want enough to be useful but not so much that you're tying up funds you might need elsewhere.
Before choosing a deposit amount, assess your actual monthly spending needs. If you typically spend $300 monthly on essentials, a $300 credit limit might force you to carry a balance or reach your limit quickly. Many financial professionals suggest depositing $500 to $750 as a middle ground that provides reasonable spending room without locking up excessive funds.
Practical Takeaway: Choose your deposit amount based on realistic monthly spending, not the minimum available. A slightly higher deposit that matches your actual needs produces better credit-building results because you're less likely to max out the card or struggle to make payments.
Annual Fees, Interest Rates, and Other Costs
Annual fees for secured credit cards typically range from $0 to $95 per year, though $25 to $50 is most common. Some issuers promote "no annual fee" secured cards as a major feature, which can save you money over time. Other cards charge an annual fee but offer benefits like cash back or rewards that may offset the cost.

Interest rates on secured cards generally run higher than standard credit cards—often between 18% and 24% APR. This reflects the issuer's perception of risk, even though your deposit provides security. The interest rate you receive may depend on factors like your credit score at the time you open the account and your initial creditworthiness assessment.
Beyond the annual fee and interest rate, watch for additional charges that can add up. Common fees include late payment fees (typically $25 to $35 if you miss a payment), over-limit fees (if you exceed your credit limit), and foreign transaction fees (if you use the card internationally, usually 1% to 3% of the purchase). Some cards also charge monthly maintenance fees or inactivity fees if you don't use the card for extended periods.
A few issuers charge application or processing fees upfront, ranging from $20 to $50. These fees come out of your deposit or are charged separately. Always clarify whether quoted deposit amounts include or exclude processing fees, as this affects your actual credit limit.
The total cost of carrying a secured card depends on your habits. If you charge $200 monthly, pay it off in full, and make no late payments, you'd only pay the annual fee—potentially $0 to $95 yearly. But if you carry a balance of $300 on a card with 22% APR, you'll pay roughly $66 in annual interest charges alone, plus any annual fee.
Practical Takeaway: Compare the complete fee structure, not just annual fees. A card with no annual fee but 24% APR might cost more than one charging $50 annually with 18% APR, depending on how you use it. Calculate your potential costs based on your actual spending and payment plans.
How Secured Cards Help Build Credit History
Credit bureaus track five main factors when calculating your credit score: payment history (35%), amounts owed relative to your limits (30%), length of credit history (15%), credit mix (10%), and new credit inquiries (10%). Secured cards specifically help with the first two categories and create a record of credit history.

Payment history is the single most important factor. When you make on-time payments on a secured card, the issuer reports this to credit bureaus. Each on-time payment adds a positive mark to your record. Over months and years, a consistent pattern of on-time payments substantially raises your score. Conversely, even one late payment can damage your score for seven years.
Credit utilization—the second-most important factor—refers to how much of your available credit you're using. If your limit is $500 and you charge $400, you're using 80% of your limit. Credit bureaus prefer seeing utilization below 30%. With a secured card, keeping your balance low relative to your limit demonstrates responsible credit management. This is why starting with an adequate deposit amount matters: a $200 limit can be hard to keep below 30% utilization ($60 maximum), while a $500 limit gives you more breathing room ($150 maximum).
Length of credit history affects your score, but this factor works in your favor over time. The older your accounts, the better they help your score. A secured card you open today and maintain for two years becomes a credit-building asset. Even after you close it or graduate to an unsecured card, it remains on your report for several years.
Your credit mix—having different types of credit like cards and installment loans—also matters slightly. One secured card alone won't dramatically improve this factor, but it's part of the picture. Over time, a diverse credit portfolio shows you can manage different types of borrowing.
Practical Takeaway: Treat your secured card as a credit-building tool with one goal: making on-time payments. This single habit matters more than anything else. Set up automatic minimum payments or calendar reminders to ensure you never miss a due date.
Comparing Different Secured Card Issuers and Their Features
Major banks and credit unions offer secured cards with varying terms and features. Capital One's Secured Mastercard, for example, requires a minimum $200 deposit with no annual fee and reports to all three credit bureaus. Discover offers a secured card with no annual fee, cash back rewards (1% on all purchases, 2% at gas stations and restaurants), and
