The medical center operates as a full-service hospital with approximately 300 beds and serves hundreds of thousands of patients annually. MAMC provides a wide range of medical services including emergency care, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation services. The facility also maintains specialty clinics, outpatient services, and a dental clinic. As a teaching hospital affiliated with military medical education programs, Madigan trains military physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
The hospital's mission focuses on providing quality healthcare to the military community while supporting military readiness. This dual purpose means the facility must balance civilian patient care with its role in supporting active-duty operations. Being familiar with MAMC's structure and services helps patients understand what types of care are available and which contact methods work best for different situations.
Madigan Army Medical Center employs over 5,000 military and civilian healthcare workers. The facility handles approximately 600,000 outpatient visits and performs roughly 20,000 surgeries annually. These numbers demonstrate the scale of operations and suggest that communication channels may experience varying wait times depending on the time of day, day of week, and current operational demands.
Practical Takeaway: MAMC is a comprehensive military hospital serving multiple categories of patients. Knowing what services the facility offers helps you determine whether contacting Madigan is appropriate for your healthcare needs, or whether another facility might be more suitable.
Main Phone Numbers and Departmental Contacts
The primary phone number for Madigan Army Medical Center is (253) 968-1110. This general line connects callers to a central operator who can direct calls to specific departments, clinics, or services. However, calling the main number may result in longer wait times, particularly during peak hours (typically mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays). Understanding which specific number to call for your particular need can reduce wait times and get you to the right person more quickly.

For medical emergencies, patients should call 911 or proceed directly to the Emergency Department. Do not use administrative phone numbers for emergency situations. The Emergency Department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Patients arriving by ambulance or private vehicle can access emergency services without prior authorization or appointment.
Many departments within Madigan maintain separate phone numbers for appointments, medical records, billing, and clinical inquiries. For example, the Appointment Line operates at (253) 968-1110 extension 100 (though extensions may change, so confirming through the main number is recommended). Primary Care Clinics can often be reached through clinic-specific numbers. Patients established with a primary care provider can often reach their clinic directly by requesting their provider's office number from the main operator.
The pharmacy department handles prescription-related questions and can be reached through the main hospital line. If you need information about medications, refills, or pharmacy hours, asking for pharmacy services through the main number will route you appropriately. Medical Records department handles requests for copies of health information, which is a common need for patients transferring to civilian providers or moving to different duty stations.
Specialty departments including Cardiology, Orthopedics, Urology, Gastroenterology, and others maintain clinic hours and appointment lines. While some specialty services can be reached through the main number, others have dedicated lines listed on the MAMC website. Having your Social Security number (or military ID number) available when calling speeds up the process of locating your medical record and appointment information.
Practical Takeaway: Use the main number (253) 968-1110 as your starting point, but ask the operator for direct numbers to specific departments when possible. This approach reduces your overall call time and gets you to the right service faster.
Online Contact and Appointment Methods
Beyond phone contact, Madigan Army Medical Center provides several online methods for reaching the facility and managing appointments. The official MAMC website (madigan.tricare.mil) contains contact information, departmental listings, and links to online services. The website includes a directory of clinics with hours of operation and sometimes direct phone numbers. This resource allows you to research departments, verify contact information, and locate specific services before calling.

Military Health System (MHS) online portals provide registered users with the capability to request appointments, send secure messages to clinical staff, review test results, and access portions of their medical records. Patients with an existing medical record at MAMC and a registered account can use these portals to initiate communication without making a phone call. Portal-based appointment requests typically receive responses within 24 to 48 business hours, though urgent matters should not rely on this method.
TRICARE Online is the appointment scheduling system used by MAMC and other military treatment facilities. Established patients can log in to TRICARE Online using their military ID number or Social Security number along with a password. The system allows browsing available appointment slots, scheduling routine appointments, and viewing appointment history. New patients typically cannot schedule through TRICARE Online and must call the appointment line or visit in person to establish care.
Email contact for administrative purposes may be available for specific departments. However, email should not be used for urgent medical matters or patient safety concerns. General inquiries about billing, medical records requests, or administrative questions can sometimes be handled via email, but response times are typically longer than phone or portal-based methods. Specific department email addresses should be obtained through the main phone line or official website rather than guessing at email formats.
The MAMC website also publishes clinic hours, holiday schedules, and notices about service changes. During military administrative holidays, some services may operate on reduced schedules or close entirely. Checking the website before visiting or calling helps ensure the service you need is available at the time you plan to contact MAMC.
Practical Takeaway: Use online portals and the website to gather information and schedule routine appointments, but continue using phone contact for urgent matters, complex situations, or when you need immediate guidance from a healthcare provider.
Visiting the Physical Location and Walk-In Services
Madigan Army Medical Center is physically located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, specifically at 9040 Fitzsimmons Drive, Tacoma, Washington 98431. The facility sits on a secured military installation, which means access is restricted. Patients and visitors must pass through base entry control points and may be required to show military ID or a dependent ID card. Civilian beneficiaries and retirees should bring their military ID card or TRICARE card to gain entry to the base.

For individuals without military ID, the base maintains a visitor pass system. First-time visitors or those who have lost their ID may need to present a valid driver's license and potentially other identifying documents at the entry control point. Processing times for visitor passes can range from a few minutes to 30 minutes depending on security screening procedures. Planning extra time for base entry is prudent, particularly during peak hours (typically morning commute times between 0700-0900 and mid-day between 1130-1330).
The Emergency Department welcomes walk-in patients 24 hours daily and does not require prior authorization or appointment. Patients experiencing acute medical conditions, injuries, or severe symptoms can proceed directly to the Emergency Department entrance. Triage staff assess patients upon arrival and prioritize based on medical urgency. Emergency wait times vary considerably but can range from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the volume of patients and severity of conditions being treated.
Primary care clinics and specialty clinics typically operate by appointment only and do not accept walk-in patients during standard hours. However, many clinics maintain same-day appointment slots for acute or urgent complaints. Calling ahead to check availability is more productive than walking in without an appointment. Some clinics offer urgent care clinics during extended hours, which may accommodate patients without scheduled appointments during specific timeframes.
Parking at MAMC is available to authorized users. Patients and visitors should display appropriate parking credentials or pay for visitor parking if required. The facility maintains multiple parking areas, including accessible parking spaces near the main entrance and other buildings. Arriving early enough to locate parking reduces stress
