Chase provides bill payment functionality through multiple channels, including their online banking website, mobile app, and phone-based services. The bank does not charge fees for using their basic bill payment features for most account holders. Bill payment through Chase allows you to send money directly to businesses, service providers, and individuals from your Chase account.
The bank processes bill payments through their internal systems and the automated clearing house (ACH) network, which is the same system used by most financial institutions in the United States. Payment processing times vary depending on which payment method you choose and when you submit your payment request.
Chase's bill payment system maintains records of your payment history within your online banking account. You can view past payments, scheduled payments, and payment confirmation details whenever you log into your account. This record-keeping feature allows you to track spending patterns and verify that payments have been processed.
Different types of accounts may have varying bill payment features. Business accounts, student accounts, and premier accounts may each have different capabilities or payment limits. Reviewing your specific account agreement or contacting Chase directly can clarify what features are included with your particular account type.
Practical Takeaway: Review your Chase account documentation to understand which bill payment methods are included with your specific account type, and note that most standard bill payment features do not carry additional fees.
Setting Up Bill Payment Through Chase Online Banking
Chase online banking serves as the primary portal for managing bill payments on your computer. To use this service, you must have an active Chase checking or savings account and be registered for online banking access. The registration process requires verifying your identity and creating login credentials.

Once you are logged into Chase online banking, you can navigate to the "Pay Bills" or "Payments" section, depending on your specific account interface. This area displays options for adding new payees, scheduling payments, and viewing your payment history. The process involves entering the recipient's information, such as their name and mailing address.
When setting up a bill payment, you provide details about where the payment should be sent. For many common payees like utility companies, credit card companies, and loan servicers, Chase has pre-populated information available in their payee database. This reduces the need to manually enter address information for frequently paid bills.
For payees not in Chase's database, you enter their mailing address manually. This includes payments to individuals, small businesses, or organizations that Chase has not previously stored. After adding a payee for the first time, that payee remains saved in your account for future payments.
You can schedule payments to occur on specific dates or set up recurring payments for bills that repeat monthly. When you schedule a payment, you select the amount, payment date, and the account from which the funds will be withdrawn. Chase displays the expected delivery date based on when you schedule the payment, though actual delivery times may vary.
The online banking interface allows you to review all details before confirming a payment. Once you confirm, Chase generates a confirmation number that you can reference if you need to track the payment status later. This confirmation number appears on your screen immediately and is also sent via email if you have email notifications enabled.
Practical Takeaway: When first setting up online bill payment through Chase, add your most frequently paid bills to your payee list to streamline future payments, and always note the confirmation number for your records.
Using the Chase Mobile App for Bill Payments
The Chase mobile app provides bill payment functionality directly from your smartphone or tablet. The app is available for both iPhone and Android devices and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Mobile bill payment through Chase offers the same core features as the online banking website but with an interface optimized for smaller screens.

To pay bills through the Chase mobile app, you log in with the same credentials you use for online banking. The app displays a dashboard showing your accounts, recent transactions, and payment options. From the main menu, you can select the bill payment or payments option to begin creating a payment.
The mobile app's payment process mirrors the online banking process but may have slightly different navigation. You select or add a payee, enter the payment amount, choose the account to pay from, and select your payment date. The app displays a confirmation screen before you finalize the payment, allowing you to review all details on your mobile device.
One advantage of the mobile app is the ability to photograph checks and deposit them directly through mobile check deposit, which is separate from bill payment but often accessed through the same app interface. While this is not a bill payment feature, it represents another payment-related tool available to Chase customers.
The mobile app provides notifications about upcoming scheduled payments and payment confirmations. You can enable push notifications in the app settings to receive alerts when payments are processed. These notifications help you track payment activity without logging into your full account.
Security features within the Chase mobile app include fingerprint login, facial recognition on supported devices, and the option to require a PIN or password for sensitive transactions. These security measures protect your account if your phone is lost or accessed by someone else.
Practical Takeaway: Enable push notifications in the Chase mobile app to receive alerts when your scheduled payments are processed, which provides real-time confirmation without requiring you to log in manually.
Payment Processing Times and Delivery Methods
Chase bill payments are not processed instantly. The time between when you schedule a payment and when the recipient receives the funds depends on several factors, including the delivery method and when you submit the payment request. Understanding processing times helps you schedule payments appropriately so bills are paid on time.

ACH payments typically take three to five business days to deliver from the time Chase processes them. Chase usually processes payments submitted on business days, though the specific processing time depends on when you submit your payment during the day. Payments submitted late in the evening or on weekends may not process until the next business day.
Chase offers standard delivery and expedited delivery options for certain payees. Standard delivery typically takes the longer timeframe mentioned above. Expedited delivery, when available, may deliver funds more quickly but may carry a fee. You select your delivery preference when setting up the payment.
Mailed check payments represent another delivery method for payees without electronic payment capabilities. When you use this option, Chase prints and mails a physical check to the recipient's address. Mailed checks typically arrive within seven to ten business days, depending on mail delivery in your area.
The expected delivery date appears on your confirmation screen when you schedule a payment. This date is an estimate based on the delivery method selected and the payment date you choose. Actual delivery may occur before or after this estimated date depending on processing delays or mail delivery circumstances.
For bills with specific due dates, plan your payment at least three to five business days before the due date to account for processing time. For example, if a bill is due on the 15th of the month, submit your payment by the 10th to provide a safety margin. This approach reduces the risk of late payments due to processing delays.
Practical Takeaway: Always schedule bill payments at least three to five business days before your due date to ensure delivery occurs on time, and reference the estimated delivery date provided during the payment process.
Managing Recurring Payments and Payment History
Chase allows you to set up recurring or automatic bill payments for bills that repeat monthly or on another regular schedule. Recurring payments are useful for consistent bills like mortgage payments, insurance premiums, rent, or subscription services. Once you set up a recurring payment, Chase automatically processes it on the schedule you specify without requiring you to manually initiate each payment.

To create a recurring payment, you select the payee, enter the amount, choose your recurring frequency (such as monthly or biweekly), and select the start date. You can also set an end date if you know when the recurring payment should stop. For example, if you are paying off a car loan that will be finished in 24 months, you can set the recurring payment to end at that time.
Recurring payments can be modified or canceled at any time through your online banking account or mobile app. If a bill amount changes, you can update the payment amount before the next scheduled payment. If you no longer need the recurring payment, you can cancel it, and Chase will not process any future payments for that payee.
