How to Remove a Credit Card from Apple Pay 💳

Removing a card from Apple Pay is straightforward—whether you're switching to a different payment method, closing an account, or simply cleaning up unused cards. The process takes just a few taps and works the same way across iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches linked to your account.

Why You Might Remove a Card

People remove cards from Apple Pay for different reasons. You might delete a card after closing that account, replace an expiring card with a renewed one, reduce the number of payment options to avoid accidental charges, or remove a card you no longer use. Apple Pay stores your card details securely, but removing it permanently erases that data from your device.

Removing a Card on iPhone or iPad

The most common way to manage Apple Pay is through your iPhone or iPad.

Steps:

  1. Open the Wallet app (or Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay on some versions)
  2. Tap the card you want to remove
  3. Tap the three dots (⋯) or information icon in the corner
  4. Scroll to the bottom and select Remove This Card or Delete Card
  5. Confirm when prompted

The card is immediately removed from Apple Pay and cannot be used for contactless payments. If you removed it by mistake, you can add it back by opening Wallet, tapping the plus sign, and re-entering the card details.

Removing a Card from Apple Watch

If you have a linked Apple Watch, the card may sync to both devices—or you may have added it separately to your watch.

Steps:

  1. Open the Wallet app on your Apple Watch
  2. Swipe left on the card
  3. Tap the trash icon (🗑)
  4. Confirm deletion

Removing a card from your watch doesn't automatically remove it from your iPhone, and vice versa. You'll need to delete it from each device separately if you want it gone from both.

Removing a Card via Mac

If you manage Apple Pay on a Mac, the process differs slightly.

Steps:

  1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
  2. Select Wallet & Apple Pay
  3. Click the card you want to remove
  4. Click the minus (−) button
  5. Confirm deletion

What Happens After You Remove a Card

Once removed, the card is deleted from Apple Pay permanently—your payment data is erased from that device. This does not affect:

  • The actual credit or debit card itself (still valid with your bank)
  • Other devices where the card might be stored
  • Your bank account or credit history
  • Transactions you already made with that card

However, it does mean you can no longer use that card for Apple Pay purchases on that device. If you need it again, you'll have to re-add it manually.

Important Distinctions

Removing vs. suspending: Apple Pay doesn't have a "suspend" feature—removing a card is the only way to stop it from being used. If you want to keep the option to use it later, take a photo of the card details or write down the number before deleting.

Multiple devices: Your Apple Pay cards do not automatically sync across all your devices. A card removed from your iPhone stays on your iPad unless you remove it there too. Make sure to delete from each device where it's stored if that's your intent.

When You Might Want to Keep a Card

Some people keep multiple cards in Apple Pay for convenience—perhaps a primary rewards card for everyday purchases and a backup for situations where one card doesn't work. Others prefer to store only active cards to reduce clutter or the risk of accidental charges. Your choice depends on how you use Apple Pay and your comfort with having payment options available.

Need to add a card instead, or troubleshoot an issue with a card that won't delete? Those processes work similarly—the Wallet app is your hub for managing all Apple Pay activity.
