To earn SSDI benefits you first need to file an application. You can apply for SSDI online, over the phone, or in person at your local Social Security office. You will need to provide the following information for your SSDI application.

You must be disabled for five full months before you can receive disability payments but you should still attempt to apply right after your disabling condition occurs.

If your application happens to be approved before 5 months have passed then you will start to receive benefits as soon as the 5 months are up. However, it is more likely that it will take more than five months for your application to be approved.

In order to apply, you will need to include the information below.

Identification info:

  • Birth certificate
  • Social Security number

Financial indicators:

  • Most recent W-2 or,
  • Federal tax return

Medical records:

  • Dates of your medical visits
  • Contact info of your doctors & any hospitals or clinics that you have visited for your condition
  • Clinical test results

You should try to gather this information and apply for disability benefits as soon as you become disabled because the applications can take quite a while to process.

If this is the case you will receive back-payments starting with the sixth month.

For example, if you file an SSDI claim and it is approved for a monthly benefit of $1,258 at the beginning of the eighth month that you have been disabled, then you will receive back payments for the 6th and 7th months plus a normal payment for the eighth month. That’s $3,774 total.
