If you’re feeling concerned about the status of your tax refund and it seems like it’s been a while since you filed, you can put your worries to rest with the IRS tracking tool called “Where’s My Refund.”

This useful tool allows you to easily check the status of your refund, regardless of whether you filed your taxes online or by mail. With “Where’s My Refund,” you can track your refund’s progress and get an estimate for when you can expect to receive your payment.

What to Do About a Missing Tax Refund?

To track your tax refund, visit the IRS website or use the IRS2Go app, it will ask you for your personal information, such as your Social Security Number, filing status and exact refund amount.

Then it will provide you with one of the following status messages:

  •  Return received: which means the IRS has received your tax filing but has yet to process it.
  •  Refund approved: which means the IRS has approved your refund amount.
  •  Refund sent: which means the IRS has sent your payment.

If necessary, you can call the IRS after the appropriate waiting period, which is typically three weeks for taxes filed by mail or six weeks for tax filings sent by mail. You can also contact the IRS if you haven’t received your refund despite having a “Refund Sent” status on your account.
