Free Government Grants and How to Get Them

Government grants for individuals are awarded to qualifying recipients through U.S. federal and state government programs each year. These grants can be used towards essential expenses, including the cost of food, housing, education, and medical bills. However, each program has eligibility requirements that must be met to receive aid. Most of these programs provide forms of government hardship grants, which help low-income families experiencing financial hardship.

However, other programs are designed to disperse funds based on public service or academic merit. Free grant money does not require repayment so long as grants are used for their intended purposes. Here, we’ll be taking a closer look at the largest grant programs in the United States and how you can get them.

There are several government assistance programs designed to support United States citizens who are in need of financial assistance for various reasons. Are you working two or more jobs to pay your living expenses, but still struggle to make ends meet? Did you recently become employed? Has your rent payments increased? Whatever the cause of your financial hardship, you may qualify for free grants that can alleviate some of the financial burden you face.

Government assistance is available for many different types of living expenses, including groceries, childcare, and other daily expenses. While some of these are well-known, others you may not have heard of before.

If you are facing financial hardship, you may qualify for food assistance for you and your family. There are several government entities that work together to help provide fresh, healthy foods to underserved communities and families, including the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The largest food government assistance program is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also referred to as food stamps. This program provides qualifying families and individuals with monthly benefits to help with food-related expenses. Benefits are issued on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card with allotted amounts based on family income and household size. Additional food assistance programs include:

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program: This program provides food and nutrition assistance to low-income women who are pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding and children five years of age and younger.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP): This program provides food assistance to senior citizens ages 60 and older.

Free School Meals: Low-income school-aged children can receive free school meals.

Another fantastic government program that helps low-income families and households with day-to-day expenses is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. The program provides cash assistance, job training, and financial education to those who qualify.

If you are in need of childcare government grants, you may qualify for the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF), which helps cover the cost of childcare for low-income parents that meet eligibility guidelines. Additional government hardship grants are available to those who qualify. Click on the next slide to learn more.
